JCB Q&A

Post by jcb on Mar 18, 2018 22:35:58 GMT -5
Someone should suggest the idea of a next generation series to JCB to sell to WB. I think a lot of us would like a look into the gang's future, including their married lives (most common pairings used so Fraphne and Shelma) and how they advise their own teenage offspring on their mystery-solving adventures. I think I made the Scooby Doo show I wanted to make (or tried to, at least). I have no interest in doing another one unless it was a continuation of the same characters and series we started. As far as I'm concerned, Zac and I got it right (if one wanted to make a more comedy-centered version of SD).

It's obviously a personal attack against me. They also placed a flaming bag of dog poo on my doorstep the other morning and TP's my car. Oh, those crazy kids at WB.

And, btw, I talked to Becca in person about my concerns with this episode at the time and I do not at all blame her or any of the board artists who were just trying to execute the work they were asked to do to the best of their abilities. xo

I understand what you mean, but I respectfully disagree with there being something wrong with "safe." I guess it depends on exactly the context we're talking about, but creativity, to me, is about creating - which means making something new. "Safe" in this context mean pandering to the audience and doing what has been done before out of fear. THAT'S the big problem. Art motivated by fear is raerely inspired. But what do I know? I made, probably, the second most hated SD series of ll time and took use risks. That said, if they aired it even 1/8 as much as TTG, maybe an audience would have discovered the show and grown to love it like so many who have given it a chance. We'll never know. I have friends working on the new series and I wish them the greatest success. BCSD needs to get on one of the major streaming services (Netflix or Hulu). I think there it will find its audience, similar to Mystery Inc. (Also, HI JCB. ) Hi Becca! Hey guys, if you don't know, Becca Wallace is one of the absolutely brilliant storyboard artists who worked on BCSD. She did an amazing job of plussing every scene she worked on and bringing the funny. She will be running her own show in the near future. xo

They were gonna get around to him eventually. "Be Cool, Scooby Doo" was originally supposed to be called "It's Bill Nye The Science Guy, Scooby Doo!" and Bill would follow them along on every mystery annoying them with random facts about birds and rocks.

It will be lumped under a general addiction or mental health code. I had a look in the SNOMED CT* browser and couldn't see a specific clinical code for gaming addiction. *Systematized Nomenclature of Medicine - Clinical Terms Out of curiosity, is there any category in the SNOMED for just a general digital (as in phone, social media, Internet, etc., not specifically just gaming) addiction? I would imagine if it were to be listed anywhere officially that would be the logical place. It would be ironic if "Pizza O Possum" ends up bringing the world's attention to gaming addiction and charities are established in its name and WB are hailed as heroes and all the people involved in making it get Nobel prizes.

Just to make this point again, here's a new article saying "gaming disorder" is already recognized as a serious problem and may be classified as a straight up DISEASE in 2018: gkmen.com/2017/12/27/gaming-disorder-added-to-list-of-2018-diseases/Wouldn't it be funny and SO like BCSD'd Daphne if Velma had lung cancer and Daphne mercilessly taunted her to have a cigarette in order to solve a mystery? No, no it wouldn't. It would be so sick and cruel WB would be boycotted and probably sued.

Oddly, Boomerang just added five more new episodes to the streaming service. "In Space," "Doo Not Disturb," "Silver Scream," "Fright of Hand," and "Greece is the Word" have been added as of this morning. Haha - and your post about it is the extent of Boomerang's advertisement and promotion of it!

The Boomerang streaming service has just added eight additional season 2 episodes for those who subscribe. The added episodes include "Some Fred Time," "There Wolf," "Renn Scare," "How to Train Your Coward," "Worst in Show," "Mysteries on the Disorient Express," "The Curse of Kaniaku," and "Vote Velma." This brings the total number of season 2 episodes released in the US up to 10, including "Halloween" and "Scroogey Doo" which have been already on the service for a few months now. Now we just have to get the remaining 16 episodes, episodes 37-52, released in the US! Enjoy! www.boomerang.com/watch/3/27Yeah, it's a shame all that good, fun work we did in the first 3/4 of season 2 will only be available to see legally to those in the US who subscribe to their streaming site. I'm not even sure why they bother. If the show isn't valuable enough to make room for on CN and shown at a regular day and time so it can find an audience, why do they think it's valuable enough to attract people to actually pay money to see it on the streaming service? They're not even advertising the fact season 2 episodes are being added to the service. Just a big, confusing bummer all around. I hope, at least, a few people get a chance to see some of those eps and are entertained. My bar has gotten pretty low, apparently. I assume an Emmy is probably out of the question, so 4 or 5 new fans is a win to me.

The problem is virtually every single iteration of SD DOES try something new and the fans scream bloody murder. It's too subjective. BCSD changed the look (everyone hated it) and we gave the whole gang full, well rounded unique comedic personalities (most loved the writing, some hated it). It's about what defines SD to YOU that makes people like or dislike any new SD series. You can't please everyone. I've heard "You ruined my childhood" enough times to see that people want their SD safe, like they remember it. They don't like it when you take chances. A lot of people DIDN'T like SDMI. It got as many season as BCSD. That's NOT a hit show. Look at TTG. Nobody can agree on what they want from a SD series, so the only thing the creative teams can do is try to make something with integrity the THEY like - and hope for the best. Some people will like it, some won't. That's life. If the network or studio doesn't get behind the show and actually air it, though, then there's really no point in making it to begin with. Good point and agreed on all counts. I'd argue though that while "safe" is good, there needs to be a unique aspect to every new series. I very much loved Where Are You and What's New, but do I want to see 18 different shows that are exactly the same as them? No. Some elements (even if they are small elements) need to be changed so "safe" doesn't become boring, for example how a lot of people think The Simpsons has gotten tired and unoriginal after 29 seasons. I'd go as far as to say you can't even really call it a "new" series if no structural elements have been changed. In the end, as JCB said it isn't possible to please everyone as everyone has their own unique tastes of what elements of Scooby they like. The world would be boring if everyone just agreed on everything. The best you can do is try to make something which will please the general fandom, and just accept that there will be some who still don't like it (and that's perfectly okay! ) Really, the most importnt aspect that people keep overlooking is tht WB is too afraid to do anything too rdicl. Until a new regime gets in there willing to take risks, you will not get anything VERY new. SD is one of their most money-making, beloved frnchise - even if they don't know why/ So they're scared of changing anything. They'll TRY stuff, but, again, it depends onwhat THOSE execs think "defines" Scooby. We need new blood at the top willing to take chances.

I would respectfully recommend just trusting your gut and developing the Scooby Doo show you'd like to see. You'll find some Scooby fans will love it, some will hate it, others will be in the middle. There will be no consensus. The four or five people who tell you what monsters THEY would like to see may not hold the same opinions as the millions of Scooby fans who are not on this forum. Everyone has very different, subjective opinions about SD, so you're probably better off not soliciting advice beforehand directly from the fandom as much as researching what's come before and reading the various threads on the different series, movies and approaches to Scooby Doo and absorbing the passionate and occasionally silly debates about what works for some people and what doesn't. In the end, you'll still, hopefully, do whatever YOU want. What monsters do YOU want to see? What jokes? That's really all that matters. WB is very protective of their big franchise properties, so what THEY want will most likely end up being your biggest concern. Be bold, be original, be respectful, just go for it and courageously add your voice to the ever-expanding and evolving Scoobyverse. Break legs on your project. I hope it's a huge success.
