Well, I think that a lot of things that contributed to the Scrappy hatred you see around. Firstly, the 2002 movie. OK, I know that it was result of Scrappy hatred as well-but I've seen more then a few comments saying, "I actually liked Scrappy before he turned evil in the live-action film". Then there was the whole anti-Scrappy crusade on the internet... And then there was the Cartoon Network promos... You see, generally the people who met Scrappy with hostility were the people who grew up with Scooby before Scrappy...people really hate it when the show changes. It doesn't matter who, how, or what, at core they wanted just Shaggy, Scooby, Velma, Daphne, and Fred. They didn't see the point of Scrappy. Scrappy was created by Joe Barbera to convince ABC to keep Scooby on the air, (And it worked, too!) but they had no idea of knowing that. I've seen others show the blog by the writer of Scrappy's debut episode that details this to some of Scrappy's detractors, but they'll still insist, "Well, he still destroyed the franchise, anyhow" or sniff, "They'd have done better to cancel it instead of adding him," Even though it's fact that it was the character kept the show alive for the next few years, and most likely wouldn't have destroyed it, or that if Scooby had been cancelled when it did, it may never have come back, and THEN they would have been upset. But I don't think that they don't realize that, it simply shows that, bottom line, they don't want Scooby to change be it no more mysteries, addition of a nephew, real monsters, whatever, and blaming Scrappy for the demise of the franchise is the perfect way to justify that.
(I agree with you, though. At the very least, it would be good if they were fonder in their references)

"And also...someone mentioned Shaggy and Daphne broke up. I didn't watch the show where it was the four of them....did Shaggy and Daphne actually date? If so, that is really weird..."
Honestly, before What's New I don't recall any pairing being either affirmed, denied, or really directly alluded to in any way.

(I agree with you, though. At the very least, it would be good if they were fonder in their references) It's hard to remember back to my early childhood. I can't remember if I saw Scooby without him first, or with and without side-by-side. But I remember the incarnations with Scrappy were: a)pretty much never at the video store b)hardly ever on TV so when he came on it was always really special to me. And I don't know why, but the Boo Brothers has always been really special to me. I found it at the store once by chance I think, and wasn't expecting much, and it turned out to be amazing. All the puzzles and riddles, and it was different but in a really good way. The atmosphere was amazing. It really felt cinematic. I don't know where I'm going with this....I just really love Scrappy and think he's a great character. And I genuinely did not know that people dislike him because of the live action movie. I always thought it was pretty clear that movies are a parody of Scooby Doo (and not in a good way IMO) made more for adults than anything. They were written by James Gunn after all, a guy known for Slither and "PG Porn" before he did Guardians of the Galaxy. I also thought it was clear because of their parody nature, they don't take place in main continuity. But now because of references in Mystery Incorporated, I think it's confusing people as to what's canon and what's not. (Hell, Mystery Incorporated didn't make a lot of sense, with that whole museum of classic foes, yet they weren't even Mystery Inc. yet...) I digress... I agree that if they aren't going to bring him back, they need to at least stop with the easter egg insults, I think it just hurts real fans. If they're going to do easter eggs, they should be positive.

Wow. Good discussion. I'm taking it all in.
Agreed, Boo Brothers was done really well. It was one of the first Scooby full-length movies I ever saw and I still like it.

I do not want Shaggy and Daphne to be separated because they have the best flanderization when they're together in my opinion. This is the main reason why I said running two shows at once. One show for you classic gang and Fraphne/Shelma fans and the other for Scooby/Scrappy/Shaggy/Daphne fans. What does flanderization mean? I looked it up, but feel the explanations aren't fitting the context perhaps.

I agree, I think this is a really good discussion and I'm happy I started the thread, and to that end—I'm happy I found this forum. I've been wanting to talk about this for years but never had anyone to talk about it with. This place is just great. Also, isn't your avatar from Boo Brothers? Maybe I'm mixing it up with another from the trilogy, but I remember Scooby trying to read a map in Boo Bros.

And also...someone mentioned Shaggy and Daphne broke up. I didn't watch the show where it was the four of them....did Shaggy and Daphne actually date? If so, that is really weird... Most people who ship Shaggy and Daphne will agree they were dating off screen in the mid 1980's shows. I do not like the idea off them breaking up so I put every production made after The 13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo on it's own timeline.

A number of things contribute to the hate of Scrappy. The biggest is he changed the gang and formula. Because of him Fred and Velma were dropped and the half hour mystery formula changed to 3 seven minute shorts. Second is he was annoying with his original Weinreb voice and maturity in the first couple of shows. He was more useless, made dumb traps, had a worse voice, and tried too much to fight ghosts and had to be rescued. He also has been vilified on the internet and modern Scooby shows. I enjoyed him somewhat in the New Scooby Doo Mysteries and the New Scooby Doo Scrappy Doo Show. He was more mature, helped find clues, worked well with Daphne, was kinda scared of ghosts, and the Don Messiah voice was better. The shows he was in were also better. But many forget these shows and the change in Scrappy

But many forget these shows and the change in Scrappy Are you sure this is correct? I think Lennie Weinerb only voiced Scrappy for 1 season, then he was voiced by Messick from then on.

The Don Messick voice was definitely better. I forgot he had a different voice originally until recently. It's pretty weird to listen to.
