...You see, generally the people who met Scrappy with hostility were the people who grew up with Scooby before Scrappy...people really hate it when the show changes. It doesn't matter who, how, or what, at core they wanted just Shaggy, Scooby, Velma, Daphne, and Fred. They didn't see the point of Scrappy. Scrappy was created by Joe Barbera to convince ABC to keep Scooby on the air, (And it worked, too!) but they had no idea of knowing that... Well I was born in 1968 so I grew up with both, and what I do remember from my childhood was the palpable sense of disappointment to find that the Scooby Doo cartoon I was looking forward to had Scrappy in. I understand as an adult why he was created and he served his purpose, but from my childhood memories of growing up in the 70's and 80's was that I just didn't like Scrappy much, I found him a one-trick pony whose antics grew very tired very quickly even when I was young, Daphne's 'obsession of the week' in Be Cool may one day be a Scrappy-like debating/division point. It is with age that my opinion of him had mellowed, but I still wouldn't trade Fred and Velma for Scrappy.

That's interesting russ, I can't imagine Scrappy's antics getting any more tired than anyone else's in the gang. Everyone has their assigned antics that they don't deviate much from.

So imagine Velma loosing her glasses and doing her 'my glasses, I can't see without my glasses' thing two or three times every episode. Early Scrappy was like a stuck record at time.

He changed the gang and formula. Because of him Fred and Velma were dropped and the half hour mystery formula changed to 3 seven minute shorts. How do we know this again? I've heard many people saying this, but nobody ever offers up any official source or proof confirming it. I doubt it was directly because of Scrappy the changes happened. I've seen a lot of the stuff Scrappy's in, a lot of it pretty recently, and I have to disagree here. I can think of only a few occasions where Scrappy had to be rescued, out of his entire 8 year animated run. "Long John Scrappy" and "Scooby the Barbarian", maybe acouple others which he wasn't in captivity long enough to be made a point of. I wouldn't say Scrappy was useless in any of the shows. In 1979's Scooby-Doo and Scrappy-Doo, he found clues, did his best to help and played a role in taking down the baddies at the end, like "The Scarab Lives!" and "The Ghoul, The Bat, the Ugly". Throughout all the shows, he always fought monsters (And sometimes succeeded! Mummy's the Word and South Seas Scare are examples of that) What's kind of sad is, originally Scrappy was going to be more "Scrappy", but the censors thought he was "Too independant", and thus a bad role model. (I don't get it either. Maybe they thought that Independent=Rebellious? ME was confused too...) The article heavily implies Scrappy was going to be more unambiguously competent, and finally Standards and Practices relented, but then the scripts were adjusted anyway, and thus people were left with the impression Scrappy was full of hot air. The problem with Scrappy-traps wasn't that they didn't work, they just caught the wrong thing a lot of time. (Shaggy and Scooby) I kinda liked that Scrappy wanted to fight, personally. When I first saw him saying "Lemme at 'em!" I was like, "Yeah, no way." But later on in the special (Scooby-Doo and the reluctant werewolf) He DID save Shaggy and Scooby from a monster and I was like, "whoa." (You gotta remember this is the pup who can carry Shaggy and Scooby no sweat and punch through a brick wall like it's nothing.

This is a fantastic thread idea, Shaggy. Thank you for creating this!
Admittedly, I've grown to like Scrappy over the years, though I really disliked him at first. He just was a bit too annoying for my tastes and I felt like he overshadowed Shaggy and Scooby. Particularly Lennie Weinrib's Scrappy voice I found to be a bit obnoxious, especially his "puppy power" lines. Like several people have said already, I grew up with the original Scooby formula, only seeing minimal Scrappy episodes until about 5 years ago, and I really didn't like how Scrappy changed the dynamic of the show so much. It felt like the show was more focused on Scrappy then on any other member. Seeing more episodes with Scrappy however, my opinion has changed quite a bit and I don't mind Scrappy very much. The three Superstar 10 movies (Boo Brothers, Ghoul School and Reluctant Werewolf) are actually now my favorite movies of the entire franchise (though to be fair Scrappy is a bit toned down in those).
To answer the poll question though, I guess I don't really care either way as long as they do it right (the "Scrappy is evil" standby has gotten a bit irritating now). I wouldn't mind if he was brought back, but in no way would I be disappointed if he wasn't brought back, if that makes sense.

I wouldn't mind if he was brought back, but in no way would I be disappointed if he wasn't brought back, if that makes sense. No problem Maybe it's because I grew up with the Scrappy stuff alongside the classic gang that I don't mind the change in formula. I didn't see too many from the Lennie Weinrib (he was the original voice right?) era. I actually forgot that Scrappy's voice sounded like that originally until I watched the intro a few years ago. The original voice was terrible.....really bad. But I think it was Don Messick who took over after that and in the Superstar 10 movies (haven't heard that term. I usually call it the red shirt Shaggy trilogy LOL), and I think the voice was excellent from then on. I just remember seeing Scrappy was a real treat when I was a kid, as I didn't get to see his stuff quite as often. Do I feel like the gang NEEDS him? No, I think they function well without him. But I do think him being around adds to things, like putting a Cherry on a Sundae. I just love me some Scrappy, can't put my finger on it. Hooray on Boo Brothers being one of your favorites! It certainly is mine. Just love the mystery/treasure quest aspect of it, along with the unusual story. It was refreshing.

I'd rather Scrappy not return. Yes, he kept the franchise alive in the 80's, I'm aware. I'd say he has served his purpose then. The franchise is alive and doing just fine without him.
Without getting into his more annoying tendencies, there's just no role for Scrappy in the gang. He can't be a trap builder or a leader, that's Fred's role. He can't be a super smart investigator, that's Velma's role. He can't be normal, provide wealth, or be inexplicably danger prone, that's all Daphne. Bringing back Scrappy will inevitably lead to less screen time and less importance for Fred, Velma, and/or Daphne. They've done it before.

I actually think they did an ok job incorporating Scrappy. Shaggy/Scooby were still able to run away like cowards, and they were still able to pig out on food.

Yes, i would want to see him return, not as a regular character (because i think there would be the risk he overshadow others) but as a semi regular character it would be great.

In Boo Brother, Scrappy kind of replaces Fred, Daphne and Velma. Good point.

Not sure I wish for such a thing, however I notice lots of character dynamics are tread on during the time they started adding extra dogs. Admittedly, even Dum has some very clone qualities to him, despite my defenses of him on other threads.

It would be alright if they did something a little different with Scrappy like maybe use him as a substitute character for whenever one of the main cast gets sick or otherwise sits a mystery out seeing as he could easily take on whatever role is needed (i.e Fred's out because his writing is about to be published so Scrappy can make the traps and that's it...Velma can lead in those instances seeing as she is the go to leader after Fred) then he disappears until needed again.

Bringing back Scrappy will inevitably lead to less screen time and less importance for Fred, Velma, and/or Daphne. They've done it before. Seriously? Since when is it that only one character can DO something? Shaggy and Scooby are scared together. Fred and Velma solved the mystery together. There are no predefined functions that MUST be filled or CAN'T be exceeded. To say they are, and to say there is no viable way to add another character is insulting the creativity of the writers. And by the way, since when is being "Normal" or "Inexplicably Danger Prone" an integral part of mystery solving? "They've done it before" How do you know that was the reason? I know I wasn't there, but were you? This is not the 80's. There were some very strict limitations over cartoons, but now it's different. And the rest of you above are just listing off the roles of mystery Inc, saying "He can't" because mystery inc's roles are already filled. But guess what? Scrappy's not Fred, or Velma, or Daphne, or Scooby, or Shaggy. Even in the 80's, when allegedly became a "Fred Clone", he was not Fred. That's like saying that Fred's sole "function" was finding clues for Daphne. But guess what? This is a TV Show, not math. Making characters mere "functions" to finish a goal is bad writing, which is why I am so glad that the characters on Scooby-Doo aremore then just functions. And by the way, if your so set on Scrappy finding a "niche" then look no further. He was the motivation. He kicked the ball rolling. Why, in one of the shorts Shaggy and Scooby switched bodies, and their response was to moan with despair, but Scrappy was like, "Nope! We're getting you back to normal!" And thus got them moving.
