I'm beating a dead horse, but the first Gunn movie was meant to be satire. Poe's Law went into effect 100%. It's amazing how back in 2001 we couldn't see that but even more amazing that not only was it misunderstood but WB adopted various aspects of the film and perpetuated them.
To be clear, I believe the film in question was a very interesting take on the franchise, a worthy standalone film, but by no means canon. There are various events which would never happen in the Scooby universe. Zombie Island had just pushed the boundaries two years before, but this was something else entirely. I don't dislike the film, in fact the "I Quit" scene is absolutely brilliant both in layout and euphemism, but it's not Scooby. It's the exact opposite of what the Scooby gang would do in every aspect.
