I’m excited to share that I’ve just published the first chapter of my latest fanfic, titled A Murder at Crystal Cove High. This fanfic was inspired by my dissatisfaction with the recent adult Scooby-Doo series Velma. Personally, I felt the show’s overreliance on in-your-face raunchy humor and edgy situations was disappointing, and felt like the writers were using it as a crutch for their poor writing and bad characterizations. To use a recent example, I feel the Netflix show Wednesday showed how to do a good job of reimagining a franchise for an adult audience, and staying true to who the characters are. While this fanfic is not a reimagining or remake of Velma, it is my own take on what I would have liked to see in an adult Scooby-Doo series.
The plot of the fanfic involves Shaggy, Fred, Velma and Daphne transferring to the prestigious Crystal Cove High. However, when a student is suddenly murdered, the four teens begin to form a friendship when they start investigating the case. During the course of the story, each of the characters also deals with their own personal struggles, including Shaggy’s poor self-esteem and anxiety issues; Velma’s struggles with social awkwardness and connecting with her roommate Thorn; Fred feeling a lack of substance with trying to make friends with the guys on the football team; and Daphne coping with two very different roommates; one (Dusk) being guarded and brusk, and the other (Luna) being shy and cautious to open up. For a creative challenge, Scooby is not in this fanfic similarly to how he was absent from Velma. However, several recurring characters from the Scooby-Doo franchise also make appearances, including Red Herring, Gibby Norton, Elliott Blender, Mr. B, Del Chillman, Coach Hayes (from the video game Scooby-Doo! First Frights), Marcie Fleach and Principal Quinlan.
The first chapter is now available on both AO3 and Fanfiction.net. My current plan is to post a new chapter every Friday. There are 13 chapters in all, and the final chapter will be posted on August 11.
