Have you noticed that ever since "A Pup Named Scooby Doo", Fred has gotten dumber and dumber? Which version do you prefer? The Dumb Fred or the more serious one?
Even though dumb Fred is funny at times, I kinda prefer the more serious, smarter Fred.

Well, he is over 40 now. When guys reach that age it's common to start going through a 2nd childhood. Seriously, I know what you mean. I kinda like the smarter Fred too What I find really amazing is that Frank Welker...who has to be at least in his late 60's...is able to make the new SD:MI Fred sound even younger than he did in SDWAY? Not just the voice itself, but the modern sounding vocal inflections & mannerisms he's added, and as you say adding a certain level of immaturity. I'd think that would be a real challenge as a voice actor himself is getting older, having the character he plays getting younger. Mark

I think it`s nice to have a happy medium. Fred was so annoying in a pup named scooby-doo. But since then I really enjoy his character. He is so funny in the new series.

I agree with SpiderScooby. I do enjoy the smarter Fred, even though he is funny in SDMI.

I think the original fred from the first series ever relesed (i forget what its called) was too serious, he lacked the human flaws that characters require to achieve depth of personality required in todays cartoons, I mean think about it back in the 60s no characters had any real depth they were staight forward personalities often based on stereotypes to make children smile and the company a few bucks, today characters from shows of decent quality require a level of depth to keep people interested without it the show turns into a gimmick that has a cult following but no people who genuinely love the show this often leads to the show being dropped not long after being picked up (see chowder and flapjack) while the shows with story lines and believable characters continue to go strong with a steady growing fan base all the while generating a substantial profit for the people who own and air it (see ben 10, scooby doo and generator rex) so to give fred depth they had to give him a personality and personalities have flaws and not long after that we saw the birth of numbskull fred, they went overboard with the whole making fred interesting thing, he went from being void of personality to being hyperactive, obsessive, neurotic and stupid. zombie island fred was after a pup named scooby doo but he was smarter than that fred but was less of a "perfect citizen" than the original fred, then in whats new scooby doo Fred hit a level of stupidity never before seen in scooby doo and after that i think they saw the error of their ways and matured him a little, its a given that hes still clueless but i do think this fred is smarter than the last "your playing the digital compass" and "fred thats not a kilt its my new skirt" from scooby doo and the lochness monster are the two dumbest fred moments that come to mind when i think dumb fred, theres more but off the top of my head they are the ones that stand out. thats my theory anyway, dumbing fred down was a nessesity to keep him fresh but they over did it and now they are slowly fixing it, they could have kept zombie island fred personality but because hes like early 20s there and in the newer ones hes a teenager he would be too mature. i would like it if he was smarter than what he is at the moment but not quite as smart as zombie island fred there I belive lies the happy medium they are yet to discover, give them time though it will come around eventually *fingers crossed* hope that makes as much sense to you guys as it does to me at the moment

When you say "dumber", do you mean oblivious? The head writers have said the SD:MI Fred is most certainly *not* dumb. Obsessed as well. The man loves his traps (and is beginning to feel the same about Daphne). I like this Fred. As Atlanta says, he has a personality and flaws. SDWAY? Fred was, upon hindsight, a tad flat and one dimensional.

Fred is far from dumb in the new series - he can build the most complex traps. No, but he is kinda clueless{in a good way!}

can't help but think that some of his cluelessness is faked by him, to get out of situations he feels uncomfortable with.

It's true that he's a bit clueless about things but how many times can Daphne throw herself at him and he not notice?
Plus remember when he said that he wasn't a man because he had feelings? Well he didn't seem to be using that in a figurative sense, he seemed to be using it in a literal sense like he really felt he wasn't a man anymore.
Even with what sagg said about the writers saying he's not dumb, it does seem like he has lots of dumb moments.

according to the producer of scooby doo mystery incorporated fred's current incarnation now sees the world in terms of whats important to him "traps and the gang" rather than being stupider

Fred had since let on that he's obsessed with everything Daphne does because he's afraid he'll lose her in the same way (whichever that was) he lost his mom. He may let that obsession cloud his judgment at times, especially in committing with Daphne, but as a detective, he's still got a good bit on the ball.

its funny because i read a producer's interview (during the the thirteen ghosts through pup named scooby doo rein) who was not a personal fan of fred because he felt that who super serious nature translated as a lack of personailty (he's probably enjoying mystery inc fred)
