There has been a lot of talk on here about the Don Knotts episodes recently. Cartoonlover did a poll involving Guess Who's Knott Coming to Dinner, and there has been discussion about the Spooky Fog as well. This is even more true on the Scooby Snax blog where it is currently Don Knotts week. So while there is a poll over there asking between the two episodes, I'm gonna compare The Spooky Fog to a very similar episode in The Weird Winds of Winona
The similarities are glaring. A town has a weird weather occurrence happening constantly, driving people out of town. The gang then goes into caves on the outskirts of town and finds the hideout and how the perpetrators are causing this.
The Spooky Fog has always been a tale of two halves for me. The first half is VERY well done, but the cave scenes were drawn out and boring to me. Don Knotts was fantastic as usual though
The Weird Winds of Winona was a little bit different at the beginning. It isn't nearly as dark in the first half, but the first half is actually quite a bit of fun. I love how this episode, the globetrotters episodes and The Haunted Showboat feel like posse episodes where they just have a ton of people working together and splitting up. The cave scenes were a major improvement in this episode as well
Overall, and I might be on the losing side of this one, but I lean towards the Weird Winds of Winona in a big way. It feels like they took the idea they had for The Spooky Fog and smoothed out the edges and really got what they were going for this time. Plot-wise, it is about an improvement in every area. The atmosphere and guest star were where the Spooky Fog made its argument, but I also really enjoy the light-hearted feel of several New Scooby Doo Movies even if I always love a classic dark episode, and Speed Buggy and friends were also great guest stars, so Weird Winds of Winona wins. That was an alliterative mouthful haha
