Ever since the original series they've seemed that way to me. Even in the new films. What do you guys think? If I created a thread earlier I'm sorry and please close it, I can't remember if I did.

The only series where this is not clearly the case is Be Cool. But otherwise, yes, Shaggy and Scooby are the main characters regardless of if they're the most interesting though I think in Where Are You, Velma could be considered co-lead.

Actually, I take that back. Scrappy is very clearly the main character of the 1979-1982 era as he's the one who drives the majority of the action while Scooby & Shaggy mostly just react to him.

Pretty much, though I also think that we can consider Scrappy, Daphne and Velma main characters at this point as well. Sorry Freddy.

Actually, I've always felt like they've done a good job balancing the team so that Shaggy/Scooby never totally overshadowed the other characters. Velma and Freddy have always been very prominent members with their knowledge often leading directly to the villains' capture. Daphne has her points too despite probably being the weakest presented.

I think the crew at HB and Warners have done a good job keeping Scooby & Shaggy as the main selling attraction (a bit like mascots) while also making show episodes & DTV films that highlight a different member of the crew from time to time.
I always thought that Fred was given the most attention in "A Pup Named Scooby-Doo." Funny though that while in canon he's the team leader of sorts he's rarely given the reins to drive the story along.
