I was rewatching this movie the other night for a post I'm writing on my blog, and there are a lot of different interpretations of the intricate mysteries presented in this film. We can safely presume that the Headless Horseman and his horse were fake, but there are numerous other explanations and components in the mystery that make the existence of the other ghosts a bit vague.
The ghost of Uncle Beauregard is probably the most uncertain of all of them. The sheriff's brother never actually admits to dressing up as this ghost, but Scooby finds the Beauregard costume in the closet, causing us to assume that the sheriff's brother was also dressed up as this ghost. At the end of the movie, after he was incarcerated by the real sheriff, Shaggy and the dogs run into what is presumably the real ghost of Uncle Beauregard. However, there are some little hints throughout the movie that possibly allude to the fact that the ghost was real at least some of the time. In the scene right before Shaggy calls the Boo Brothers in the guest bedroom, the ghost drives his bike right through the solid wall. However, later he is completely unable to go through walls, and has to take secret passages to "escape" as shown in the scene where the Boo Brothers face him. Additionally, when Shaggy, Scooby and Scrappy go to the cemetery and accidentally knock the hat off of the headstone, it hits the ghost in the head and he yells "ouch!" If he was able to pass through a solid wall before, the stone hat should not have been able to hurt him and would have gone right through him.
The Skull Ghost skews a bit to the "fake" side of things, but upon watching the movie again there are definitely some noticeable difference in his appearance. Towards the beginning, the skull ghost has glowing red eyes and is simply made up of bones, which you can hear clanking together. Later on in the movie, the skull ghost's costume is simply bones painted on to a black suit and you can no longer hear the clanking. This may allude that the Skull Ghost was a real ghost some of the time towards the beginning appearances, but later in the movie, was simply the sheriff's brother dressed up. While a bit subtle in the movie, the difference in appearances from the first one to the last one is a bit stunning.
Comparison:
The ghost ape is a bit tougher to discern. Going by the fact that the "escaped circus ape" looks exactly like Beebo, the ape which Farquard mentioned that Beauregard shot and had stuffed, presumably this is the ghost of that ape. However, cartoon logic doesn't always make this easy to decide, but it is hinted that the ape is a ghost throughout the movie. Either way, the ape's face when he rides the mechanical horse at the end is sooo adorable!
The Ghost in the Attic is another controversial one. You could assume that Farquard dressed up as the ghost because he had the necklace, but the ghost also could have dropped the necklace when he fell through the trap door after the struggle with Scrappy.
This last ghost, the wolf, is almost impossible to even discuss because it only appeared for maybe 30 seconds max in the very beginning of the film. Personally, I'd love to believe it was a ghost (though admittedly, that's probably my inner Scooby nerd saying "make the mystery as spooky as possible!" lol). The glowing yellow eyes though, is not something a regular wolf would presumably have, so that's at least one point for the ghost side of the argument.
So I wanted to ask, what are your opinions on which ghosts were fake in this movie? Do you think some, if any, of the ghosts were actually real supernatural spirits?
