I've been enjoying that Be Cool has been going easier on the "Fred is dumb" thing that most modern Scooby series have had - but I can't help but notice they passed on a lot of Fred's "modern" goofiness onto Daphne.

I'm finally watching an episode and I can see what you mean. She was kind of goofy like in the original series only not as much as she is in this series. I like that they are making Fred smarter, but I still don't like him that much.

Classic Fred with a bit of personality is a good thing. The redeeming factor for this incarnation of Daphne to me is, while dumb Fred was just a straight-up moron, Daphne's quirks have moved the story along and had a positive impact on the gang's efforts on more than one occasion, already. Much like classic Daphne had her "woman's intuition" to help her solve problems (compared to Fred and Velma's traditional intelligence), this new version has different methods, even if a little peculiar.

Fred was made into a jerk. Similar to what Nickelodeon did to the modern SpongeBob characters. What they did to Daphne is sorta like what they did to Lola in The Looney Tunes Show but only not as hyper and crazy.

This episode that I watched he wasn't particularly a jerk, but I never watched any other episodes of this series.

I don't think they've made Daphne into a "Fred" at all. I kind of see it as a natural evolution for the character from what we last had in "13 Ghosts" and even before that. I'm glad that we no longer I have to deal with "I love Fred" Daphne and "I'm tough and smart" WNSD Daphne. I'm glad she's back to being closer to her original portrayal.
If I had time, I'd put this post into better words/examples.

If I had time, I'd put this post into better words/examples. Thank you for that, Soph. I agree that people who say we've somehow flopped Fred and Daphne are completely off-base. First off, nobody, particularly Daphne, is "dumb" in this series. Daphne IS very eccentric and quirky, though. She's a free spirit and a non-conformist who could care less what people think of her. She's really the heart of the gang this time around. She's positive and tries to have fun, tries to lighten things up since they're usually involved in some fairly dark things. Fred, on the other hand, DOES have some control issues. He takes his position as leader of the gang VERY seriously. His choices can mean life and death for his best friends. As I've said, we went back to the original 1969/1970 series and didn't take anything away from the gang - only ADDED new traits, very purposefully, very surgically, to create a comedic ensemble that would generate comedic conflict with one another through character-driven stories. Fred MIGHT be seen as being a "jerk" sometimes, but that's what we're going for: real, three-dimensional humans that have flaws and inner-conflicts and act/react to one another like a group of best friends who are together all the time, often in stressful situations, would really behave. They tease each other, protect each other, get overly sensitive about things, have long-running arguments, have inside jokes - everything - but, at the center of it, they trust and love each other. This series is about exploring THESE characters - through a comedic prism. They're built to grow and evolve and I'm excited to see everyone's reactions to their evolution as the series progresses.

I can't wait to see how this evolves. I watched grand slam the other day and you can see the characters evolving. Daphne has her quirks and you can see her goofy side in the original series which I think might make her closer with Scooby.
Fred is a give or take for me. Sometimes I don't like him and only see him as a plot device. Other times I enjoy his character. From what I saw this series is that middle man. Not to strict like the original but not to stupid like in MI.

I'm glad Kristen Wiig isn't voicing Daphne in this show... Though to be fair, it seems Fred and Velma are both a little goofy at times, along with Shaggy (of course.) Like I said, this show is sort of trying to be like a "Family Guy" clone...

My friends and I LOVE Daphne in this series. Since this series is meant to me a comedy series I think what they have done with her is hilarious. We get a total kick out of her

Hey, just a little insider info for my pals here on this forum, I see people are starting to call Daphne's little runners "Daphneisms," which is great, but, from the beginning, when we first came up with the idea of giving Daphne a different interest each episode, we always call them "Daphne Du Jours." I honestly don't care what anyone calls them, it's just fun that people have created a term for it at all. They'll always be Daphne Du Jours to me, though.

I personally think the characters finally became who they were meant to be. I don't see where people get that Fred turned into a jerk, he seems like he stepped up into a more mature leadership type Fred, not stupid jock or overbearing power rush Fred. Daphne is just perfect, such a delight. I really like her independence and individuality. Velma is a bit whiney, there's been times she has annoyed me, but she just seems right. For the things that I've hated in this series, all is forgiven for finally balancing out some personalities!

I actually got the "Daphneism" term from Hillary Harmon Powell. It never occurred to me before that to give it a name. Is "Velma's Mind's Eye" still a thing?

I agree that they haven't been switched. Fred was a bore, while Daphne actually brings something.

I thought Fred was a jerk in the prison episode (it shall be forever known as just the "Prison Episode"), but that's it.
