Recently, I've read "I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream", a short story by Harlan Elisson published in 1967, and I've noticed some similarities with this episode in particular.
It may be intentional, but could be an indirect reference, since this story was somewhat pioneer when we talk about sci-fi works with AI as a central piece.
Here's a synopsis:
"It takes place in a dystopian world where a mastermind artificial intelligence named 'AM' has destroyed all of humanity except for five people, whom he has been keeping alive and torturing for the past 109 years by constructing metaphorical adventures based on each character's fatal flaws."
Besides the plot, which is very similar (humans trapped and tortured by a AI mastermind), there's some keypoints that kinda aligns the two stories:
- Both have the AI using humans' flaws to torture them (i.g. Shaggy and Scooby being attacked by the oven)
- Both AI use clones of one human to torment the others (Daphne's clones attack Shaggy and Scooby)
-
If anyone is interested in reading it, it's an adult story, with violence and sexual content, so be careful.

One of the main conflicts of Harlan's story is a giant bird created by the AI who can cause hurricanes. In the final scene of the WNSD episode, the house causes a strong wind to prevent the gang from stopping her.
- In the story, the humans realize the only way to stop the AI is to end themselves, cause the AI wants attention and the feeling of control over them. At the end of the episode, Velma stops the House by making everyone act like they don't care about it, cause similarly the House wants attention from the humans.
