Episode 7 and 8 were among the more enjoyable episode of the series. However, I can't help but feel episode 7 squandered a bit of an opportunity to develop the mystery, in favor of the social commentary plot of Velma experiencing the benefits of male privilege when she's dressed up as a man. This is best demonstrated when Velma happens to find the answer to what her mom's note meant on the old script that she'd been using to kill spiders. It felt a little too convenient and like the writers couldn't think of anything better. That's a pretty consistent issue I have with this show; where they'll just have something random and nonsensical explain everything because they can't think of anything better. It should also not have taken until four minutes until the end of the episode for them to see the killer for more than a few seconds.
The male privilege plot was alright. I feel it has been done far better in many other shows, which made many of the comedy bits unfunny, like the cutaway Velma's potential employer immediately hands her a sack of cash saying "you're hired" just for having a resume saying "I'm awesome." I got a good laugh out of Velma exaggeratedly putting her thumbs up and exclaiming "Oh yeah!" after peeing in a urinal for the first time. Overall though, I'd say the humor's improving. The writers don't seem to feel the need to constantly lean into the edgy humor every second, and are at least letting the plot advance somewhat, even if it's not to the level it could be.
I wasn't really a fan of any of the other gang member's plots. Them inexplicably dropping the feminist plot for Fred was odd, and I didn't enjoy the forced drama between Velma and Daphne. I did like the "I’d punch you if men didn’t sexualize women fighting!" joke. That is one of the few social commentaries I found to be decent in this show. Gigi being mad at Shaggy and then instantly making up without him saying anything was a bit too rushed, as was them breaking up off-screen between episodes and then Shaggy trying to win her back at the beginning of this one.
Onto episode 8, it was good to get a clearer focus on the mystery. The drama was a bit too much, though, and detracted from the overall mystery (but not to the extent of the last episode). The plot with Fred and the brains was really weird. The jokes about almost accidentally getting Brenda's brain pregnant and edible underwear joke showcased the more unlikeable side of this series' humor in my opinion, in the sense that both jokes felt really in-your-face and just edgy for the sake of edgy. On the positive side, I did really like the joke of Fred running through the cave (which is collapsing due to loud sounds) screaming "Help!" at the top of his lungs. It was one of those jokes that was so ridiculously stupid that I couldn't help but laugh.
All of that being said, I'm glad the show has toned down the humor and is focusing more on the mystery. The characters are still not at all that likable and the humor's forced, but the mystery at least has potential. I feel like the culprit will be Velma's mother and it's going to be revealed she faked the memory lost, but it will be interesting to see where this goes.
