The writer wanted it to be only in continuation with the first two shows, though they did note they hoped to corrupt Scrappy...and at first, I thought they succeeded, which felt awful, but now I'm wondering if somehow, they didn't. There are contradictions. The most obvious contradiction is Scrappy's heart, but to prove even further that this is a contradiction, we have to reach even beyond the characters and find something strange. (As much as I know Scrappy has a good heart and is a good puppy, that's not what I want to show you)
As it happens, Fred becomes a writer and Velma works at NASA in the movie, right?
And think about the situations which these are revealed. So similar, yet with key differences.
Similar but key differences.
Velma is at NASA, and Fred is a writer in this movie, right? That was shown in the cartoons too, but the circumstances were really different-the gang had split up on good terms and were getting back together to celebrate Scooby's birthday. Scrappy was there, helping save the day and give his uncle a great surprise birthday party. Not taking spotlight or anything, just playing his part. Same jobs, different Scrappy, different timeline.
In several Scooby-Doo episodes, Scrappy is shown to hate being called cute, like in Rocky Mountain Yiiii!, The Sorcerer's a Menace, The Nutcracker Scoob, Night of the Living Toys (weirdly that one had evil elves and the villain thought Scrappy was cute, which Scrappy hated), etc.
What did the Live Action Scrappy say? āIām as cute as a power puff girl!ā that Scrappy is proud of being cute.
Also, we know with 100% percent fact that the cartoon Scrappy really is a puppy because there was one episode where they celebrated his birthday and Shaggy and Scooby were there for his birth. Shaggy's called Scrappy a pup on at least acouple occasions ("Like, not bad for a pup..." or, "He's a growing pup, eh, Scoob?") Shaggy was the one who told the story, and maybe some people don't trust Scrappy, but Shaggy's good, right?
People who don't like Scrappy probably do get some catharsis from the live action movie, I guess I still feel weird around that part even knowing all this, but I can at least feel good knowing my Scrappy is separate from all that.
