Here's what I mean: Some Scooby fans here don't want a "soap opera" type of cartoon in SD:MI. They simply want more of the same thing they've had these 41 years, that is, more mysteries to be solved, villains being trapped and unmasked, Scooby and Shaggy being scared and eating the world, etc., etc., right? If so, then Fred's your man! When the gang had their problems in these recent eps, who, I ask wanted the gang to stay together, and solve the mysteries? Yeah, him. Fred represents more of the same. ;D
Daphne? She (and Velma, though slightly less, I'll get to that in a sec) represents more of the romantic angle some of you guys want, pining after Fred, and even giving Velma encouragement with Shaggy. You're the group that loves seeing more of those hugs and kisses!
Velma, like Daphne, represents the romance angle, but she also represents more of the realistic approach of this series, which some posters here like (count me in this group). Velma obviously pushed too hard on Shaggy, which made him choose Scooby, but I suspect she's the one in the gang who could get along without (gasp) Mystery Inc. if it ever came down to that, like it almost did recently. Her brain makes her the most real of the gang, I think. In Shrieking Madness, she was the only one who didn't get into a comical situation when the gang went their separate ways, going to Harlen Ellison's lecture, as opposed to Fred's wrestling fraternity, Daphne's protesting against everything in existence group, and Shaggy and Scooby's burger eating tragedy. Velma's the serious one, like what the series has leaned more towards, without being too serious, but different. The last scene in "The Fear of the Phantom" drove this point home more than any other to me, save for the first scene in the pilot ep, where they were suddenly put behind bars for actually solving a case.
The Shaggy and Scooby group would probably be more like the Fred group, though both did go on their own way in Shrieking Madness. They, like Velma, could ultimately make it on their own if the group ever broke up, like they almost did, if nothing more because they'd have each other to lean on. These two generally go with the flow, like what most of the posters here probably do.
Anyhoo, that's my two bits. Speculate! Debate! ;D
