Since Scoob16 has amazingly done comparisons for characters between SDMI and the legend of korra, I thought I'd do the same for another great show I like, gravity falls. I'm not sure how many of you have seen it, but I actually got into it through hearing about it on various scooby sites. The plot of the show involves an overarching mystery of similar style to scooby doo mystery inc, so heck, I'm even going to match episodes to show that the plot progression uses a similar formula. These are both some of my favorite cartoons of all time and I hope that It doesn't seem too much like I'm grasping at straws with these comparisons. If you haven't seen gravity falls, I would highly recommend it, It has fantastic visuals and character development. Here we go with the episodes, I tried to make them as in order as I could, as to show the plot progression, but a few are out of order. The first season of SDMI I felt matches up with the currently unfinished 1 and a half seasons of gravity falls:
Tourist trapped-Beware of the beast from below (first episodes with an initial clue and cliffhanger at the end)
Legend of the gobbelwonker-the creeping creatures (both involve subtle clues and take place away from the main town)
headhunters-the secret of the ghost rig (both "meet the townsfolk" type episodes that explore the environment)
the hand that rocks the mabel-revenge of the man crab (second big clue that ties directly to the first clue i.e. the locket/journal)
Irrational treasure-grasp of the gnome (both taking place at a town festival i.e. pioneer day/the royal knights fair)
The time traveler's pig-In fear of the phantom (both dealing with romance and love triangles)
Little dipper-the legend of alice may (both reveal what one of the villians of the series is after)
carpet diem-battle of the hummunganauts (both involve two of the main characters fighting over something)
land before swine-howl of the fright hound (both episodes have to do with the relationship between the characters and how much they care about the animal mascot)
dreamscapers-the secret serum (both episodes involve a cliffhanger that potentially splits up the main characters temporarily)
Gideon rises-the shrieking madness (in these episodes the problem of the previous episode is resolved but the main mystery splits into two by the end)
scaryoke-where walks aphrodite (both involve some sort of zombies that are a distraction to what is really going on)
into the bunker-escape from mystery mannor (these episodes have underground traps/bunkers in them and are both the darkest episodes of the series)
sock opera-a haunting in crystal cove (both involve the main villain starting to accomplish their evil plans i.e. bill cipher and professor pericles)
society of the blind eye-the siren's song (episodes have a character revealed to have a tragic background and a true identity i.e. cassidy williams/old man mcgucket)
blendin's game-menace of the manticore (episodes involve the main characters doing a favor for another that they care about i.e. soos/mayor jones. this is also an "arcade" type episode)
northwest mansion mystery-pawn of shadow (penultimate episodes before a big cliffhanger episode with a warning at the end from the "tragic backstory" character, old man mcgucket/cassidy williams)
not what he seems-all fear the freak (episodes with big reveals that involve the past actions of a main adult character, mayor jones/stan pines)
Now for characters:
Scooby doo/fred jones-dipper pines
shaggy rogers-soos
daphne blake/velma dinkley-mabel pines/wendy courderoy (I couldn't decide who went better with who)
Mayor jones-stan pines
Mr E-the author (I won't reveal him for the sake of spoilers)
cassidy williams-old man mcgucket
professor pericles-bill cipher
brad chiles and judy reeves-the northwests
sherif bronsen stone-sherif blubbs/deputy derland
hot dog water-candy/grenda
ethan/gary-robbie valentino
Thats all I can think of for now, let me know if anyone thinks of more, or if this is even a good comparison. thanks!
