Good notes! If you pay attention, a lot of the sound effects/villain growls and sounds are reused. It's like the laugh track. That's pretty typical of animated shows back then. It was a cost cutting way of saving money. I even remember them reusing Scooby sound effects in Josie and The Pussycats and the likes. Back then, you didn't have premade cartoon sound effects for sale. They probably recorded hundreds at a time, then used them as much as they could.

Think I'm going to go through each episode chronologically & give a short review and score on each one of them. (Even if I've written previously on the thread)
We start with a truly classic episode that's just somehow never been one of my favourites. It was tacked onto the end of my Zombie Island VHS, so I have a ton of nostalgia for it but, still, it's just not up there for me. The characters & plot beats are pretty much spot on, from the get go & the mystery is fine enough for a pilot. It's a truly solid foundation but there's so much more greatness to come.
Mystery: 6/10 Villain: 8/10 Setting: 6/10
Overall Score: 7/10

I had no idea that the zombie island VHS had this! It's also included on the Target DVD release of Mystery Begins, since it leads into this episode, full circle.

One thing I think of whenever I think about this episode is how Daphne was the one to find the first clue in the entire series (the shipping label!). I just think that bit's neat. Another neat thing is her thinking there's blood on the ground at one point. A pretty daring pilot, IMO.

Yeah, the mentioning of blood in a cartoon is fairly taboo-- even if it's not real. The Mystery Incorporated scene with Fred at the blood bank gets really close, but never actually embraces blood. And you're right, Daphne does find the first clue! She's highly introspective in this series, often helping out in useful but not boisterous ways. It would be interesting to follow the series with only one character in mind and note their contributions to a mystery. I've never really done that. On a side note, I think many Scooby episodes do pass the Bechdel test, especially by The Scooby-Doo Show.

This is my first review. I belive the 1st episode ever is the best way to start.
Plot: Typical Scooby plot. It is special, though, because it was the first ever and it does a very good job introducing us to the 5 beloved characters and their personalities. So 10/10. Set Up:Again, typical Scooby setup. I was never scared of it, but it is pretty iconic, especially the museum. 7/10. Monster: The Black Knight is such an iconic villain. 8/10 BONUS (not counting in the final score unless it is 7/10 or more) Nostalgia Boost: I saw this episode a lot as a kid in Greek Boomerang but not as much as some other episodes of the series so 7/10
Overall, this was a solid start to a legendary franchise. It is an average Scooby episode, but I have to give it credit because it was the first ever and it did a great job of setting up the main characters and establishing the enduring tone of Scooby-Doo cartoons that continues to this day.
Final Score: 9/10
