Good notes! I remember Daphne calling him the swingest gymnast at school from a long time ago. Welcome to the boards!

Good notes! If you pay attention, a lot of the sound effects/villain growls and sounds are reused. It's like the laugh track.

Hi, my name's Doobert. I've been lurking these forums for a while. Finally decided to make an account. Big Scooby fan, been one ever since I was a kid.
As for this episode, it's a pretty good episode. It certainly feels like a pilot mind you, especially with their actually being day scenes, and the actual mystery not happening until half-way through. I agree with Fruitbat, the headdress certainly freaked me as a kid. Now, it just seems kinda silly, The Black Knight is pretty cool, and I love the design too.

It was a cost cutting way of saving money. I even remember them reusing Scooby sound effects in Josie and The Pussycats and the likes.

I've been plotting out a Scooby-Doo story in my head for a while, so I decided to go back through the original series' episodes (and later on, everything up to Mystery Incorporated). What can I say? A nice start to a great, classic series! Observations: - Although this is their first case shown, Fred remarks, "We're up to our armor plates in another mystery,” implying that they have solved such cases before. Interesting notes! As for the above one, The Mystery Begins Movie was the first mystery that brought them all together, this one second.

One of my favorites as a kid, just a classic episode. The Black Knight is a cool monster and the headdress is indeed super creepy. The museum setting is fun and I love the scene where Shaggy is the swingiest gymnast

"How to steal a million" came out in 1966 and I'm wondering if it influenced this episode at all. It deals with forgery paintings as well. Even has those weird glasses too.

A lot of Ted Nichols' underscore in this seems to have been written specifically for this first episode. A lot of the action is Mickey Moused e.g. the very first usage of the chase theme in the series is matched 1:1 with actual Black Knight chase. Always weird coming back to this episode for that reason after the Nichols music made it all the way to 13 Ghosts in countless different truncated edits.

If Wikipedia (and my memory) are to be trusted, then an earlier (if not the first) use of the classic chase theme was in the initial Around the World in 79 Days segment of Cattanooga Cats, as its debut was apparently one week earlier than Scooby's. In any case, it must have been composed for "What a Night for a Knight", as it fits for the reasons Chorake mentions.

Definitely a classic. Sets a nice foundation that several later episodes build on to reach absolute greatness. Very effective as a series opener and especially impressive as a franchise opener

Ive watched this a thousand times already but Im doing a whole re-watch for all Scooby media. So this is clearly a classic and it holds up to the standard of being the start of a 50yo franchise. Some of the classic gags like Velma losing her glasses have held up so well for so long. I have to say that I’ve never watched the series in English tho cuz Italian just gives me the classic nostlagic feels, tho I have the files in both languages so one day I’ll switch. I have to say the adaptation changes are quite big at times and it gives the Italian version a brand new life. For instance, some times they have no problem in saying “bastard”, “imbecile” and other words like that which I noticed are much lighter in the English version. However, it changes the pace of the comedic timing so much and it makes the show sooo funny. In fact, I would have to say that this show was the peak of the suspence and dry comedy of the franchise. Velma is sassier than ever, Daphne has never been so oblivious, Fred is so annoyed at Scooby it kinda looks like he wished they never got a dog, Shaggy is so much smarter than how they portray him nowadays, he is funny but in a humane way.
