Was this a spoof of "Nightmare of Elm Street?" That's what it says on Wikipedia right now. I've noticed a trend in this series, especially starting around this episode where the writers seem to pick a few popular things and mash them together into a fun idea. It's new, but also based on pop culture. This episode felt like Dungeon & Dragons mixed with Jim Henson's Labyrinth.
I haven't seen any of the nightmare films but I can do so soon. There could be nods to it as well.
I think I may have asked this question before watching the episode, but yeah, it was more Dungeons and Dragons based I felt like than Nightmare on Elm Street.

The crazy stairs in the dream-world are in that Jim Henson movie, but also Yu-Gi-Oh as well. The villain himself is 100% a nod to David Bowie, with even similar clothing and the orb thing he holds.
Interesting to note that this was before the 5th edition of D&D, so 4E must have just came out, which was ironically not well-received at all. There's been a big shift in tabletop gaming since 5E, with a lot more people taking interest in it, partially due to simplified mechanics and just outright compatibility and support. Like many things, I'm sure that Youtube tabletop gaming stars, Big Bang Theory and other popular cultural trend-setters played a part in normalizing D&D, but honestly I miss the days back when it was "weird" to be a tabletop gamer like in this Scooby episode.

I actually enjoyed this episode quite a bit. It was definitely nonsensical in terms of whether the mystery was realistic or not, but I found the D&D-esque antics to be funny, especially involving the Sheriff pretending he doesn't know who the people are, and the recurring gag of "loving it more than my own children!" Of course this episode's motive would be as silly as losing the game lol.
I wasn't exactly sure why they felt the need to kick Marcie out of the gang, but I think everything worked out for the better in the end, so it doesn't bother me
