That's not too far fetched, apart from the difference in voices (Mr. E: Lewis Black; Ed Machine: Richard McGonagle). However, Alice Carswell (The Legend of Alice May) had met with Ed Machine and both discussed Mr. E's leading the gang on towards this mystery arc. Maybe there's something Machine isn't telling anybody.

(New to the board and a regular contributor to scoobypedia, I was one of the first to discover the Ed Machine CEO/Mr. E's Henchman connection). Mr. E does seem to have a special connection to the Mystery Machine. 1) He tracked them to Gatorsburg and took out their motor. Conclusion: he had a GPS tracker on the vehicle. 2) He got a box full of clues into the back of their car. Conclusion: he has a key. 3) He called them on their car radio and replied to questions. Conclusion: their radio has been tampered with and their car is bugged. They really ought to get a new vehicle.

Aw, man, now I'm getting into this! These are intriguing theories. A duplicate Mystery Machine is possible? Getting an engine out in the span of even several minutes at the risk of drawing the gang's attention is beyond incredible, cartoon or not. Could have been replaced by one with no engine, then switched with the real one again. Let's keep in mind that Mystery Inc. was well known for debunking mysteries even before we came upon them in this reboot, from Velma's tour in the very beginning. They have quite the reputation.

Maybe the Mystery Machine was owned by the original gang?

Well, with episode 21 already screened (in Canada and on Watch Cartoons Online), we now know who Mr. E is. And there are still five episodes to throw even more curves at us in this story arc.

Spoiler ahead, episode 25:
As of episode 25, theories about using a duplicate Mystery Machine for tricks like the stolen engine have strong support. It would be easy to tow in a duplicate with no engine and tow away the original van. It's the same trick the Obliteratrix used for a more dramatic effect.
