I don't know how I've gone this long without even watching the pilot of this show! It has subtle ties to the Scooby franchise, from being a likely inspiration for various elements in Zombie Island (1998) and Witch's Ghost (1999) to Gellar playing Daphne in the Gunnverse films while still playing Buffy as well. The main protagonists also dub themselves the "Scooby Gang" though I haven't made it in that far yet. The school setting is fun, and I get the feeling that Mystery Begins (2009) could have taken some notes from this show as well, though that's merely speculation.
In the first couple episodes, the dialog is pretty poor at various places, but I can't figure out if that's the actors, the writing, the era, or a combination of all three. Very little heavy CGI is employed, which gives the show an organic feel. I can't figure out why Buffy can toss a man with one arm, but then needs help like... closing a thin metal door, but the actors do a good job to keep everything feeling like it's really happening.
Overall, I'd say it's worth a watch. At least give it two episodes before you call it quits. It hasn't aged perfectly, but especially if you lived during the period it was filmed, it has an endearing feeling to it.

I always thought there was some similarity between Willow/Tara and Velma/Marcie storylines... Some time ago, I made this video - buffy opening sequence with SDMI footage, hope you enjoy

I've actually seen all of Buffy (and the spinoff Angel) and it's an amazing show. I think you phrased it perfectly when you said it feels like how Zombie Island would have been if it were made into a show. It definitely has that same level of maturity as that era of films. The dialogue does get a bit better as you go on. The "Scooby Gang" stuff comes in during season 2, though I think Xander wears a Scooby-Doo t-shirt sometime in season 1 if I remember right.

i watched all of buffy and angfel, and both shows are a lot of fun. they dont actually show willow and Tara kissing, just scenes of Xander watching as the sounds of them kissing are evident. probably due to studio not agreeing with showing a girl-girl kiss. probably the same reason marcie and Velma dont kiss in MI.

That's always bothered me as well. It's frustrating and ridiculous that they felt the need to censor that, especially given they decided to include the relationship in the show in the first place. Marcie and Velma never officially dated in SDMI, while Willow and Tara did, so it makes no sense for them to censor that out.

I've seen the first four-ish seasons. My favorites are Oz and Cordelia, and they both disappear Though I'm planning to go through it again soon, because I feel like Buffy herself's gonna be a favorite upon a rewatch.

Buffy is my favorite live action show of all-time. I watch it at least once every year, and I'm currently watching it with my friend who's never seen it before, and have gotten her to love it too. We are on season 4. Angel is pretty great too, though not as strong in my opinion. I haven't watched that one in a while though. scoobnick and Doo, slightly misremembering there, as starting in the later half of season 5, Willow and Tara are shown kssing multiple times throughout the series. A lot of it has to do with the time-period, and the fact that prime-time shows just never show physical intimacy between same sex couples because it was seen as "too risky" or "alineating" or whatever other bull**** they wanted to come up with. Of course, the writers found some...interesting ways to get around this. cometcrystal, if you want more Cordelia, I highly recommend Angel. She's AMAZING in that.

Good to hear that they at least kissed several times. And yes, I agree that Cordelia is amazing in Angel!

thanks for the correction dooscoobert. No problem! I feel like the first one is easily missed because it's such a seemingly small moment in a uh, bigger episode, and after it you don't really pay much attention, so I understand the misremembering.

I also remember the show using some Hanna-Barbera sound effects as well, like the H-B wolf howl at the start of the intro, or one of their bat squeal sound effects (like in the episode Dracula appears in.)
