I thought as another interesting post, I'd share with you this book Disney originally wrote and published in 1975, "The Haunted House." It has no relation to their famous "Haunted Mansion" attraction at the Disney parks, and is instead an original story featuring Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck and Pluto investigating a haunted house they run out of gas near. But it turns out to be a very "Scooby-Doo"-esque story!
It was also adapted into a book-and-audio read-along by Fisher-Price and Disney Records in 1981. Veteran Hanna-Barbera voice actor Hal Smith narrates and voices the sheriff near the end, and there are also some familiar H-B sound effects. Disney buffs here will also notice that they even got Clarence Nash to voice Donald Duck!
The plot involves Mickey, Donald and Pluto driving along at night, only to run out of gas outside a creepy-looking old house, just like the Mystery Machine. Mickey decides to investigate, thinking whoever lives there can help them, but they end up coming across what appear to be ghosts, bats and a skeleton! And of course, in true Scooby-Doo fashion, the house is actually a hideout for three bank robbers, using disguises and special tricks to scare people away, and it's Pluto who eventually ends up saving the day, complete with a sheriff arresting the crooks (again, just like "Scooby-Doo!")
I wonder if Disney came up with this story in response to "Scooby-Doo"'s popularity of the time? Hey, it WAS the mid-1970s. And of course I did a vlog as the Big Bad Wolf reviewing the read-along adaptation making numerous comparisons to the "Scooby-Doo" cartoons, along with a fun little surprise at the end for you all...
Just felt like sharing, given how it feels so much like a typical classic "Scooby-Doo" mystery!
