I'm a big Scrappy fan. I think he's the least annoying (and my favorite) of Scooby's relatives. (IF anybody deserves the fan-hatred, it's Scooby-Dumb imho) Lennie Weinrib's voice was a little annoying, but Don Messick played him perfectly. Scrappy was the only one who could 'see behind the curtain' as it were, and knew the monsters were nothing but guys in disguises. In some episodes & films, when he was finally "let at 'em" he actually beat the bad guys up! I honestly think he's so derided because his most popular season was 13 Ghosts - you know, the first time the monsters were actually real!? His "let me at 'em" schtick got really old and annoying, because NOW he really was a clueless, cocky little pup - which is a bit annoying. Pre (and post) 13 Ghosts Scrappy I think is great, however. I'd love to see him return, and NOT in a mocking cameo like in M:I. An actual full-fledged return. With the rest of the gang in tow to boot. I think that'd be great to see. Although, with his reputation, I have my doubts that'll ever happen. Interesting point! Usually if there's one version of Scrappy that people favor it's thirteen ghosts! But it's fine-sometimes people forget that there's more then that Scrappy to love. Since it is becoming slowly clear that the writers really DON'T seem to be allowed to use Scrappy for some reason, the cameo from Mystery Inc. seems less mocking and more wistful and bittersweet- like "this is the best we can do" Daphne's sadness when Fred stops her from speaking of Scrappy is resonant. But nice comment! If this is true, and the few references they HAVE made are not to mock Scrappy but rather to keep him alive (which I personally doubt), then it's very cruel to have 90% of the disparaging remarks come from Fred. Frank Welker originally auditioned for Scrappy when they created the character, he came up with the Puppy Power catchphrase, and if they brought back Scrappy, Frank would likely be the voice actor, since Scooby's current voice actor is always Scrappy's as well (Don voiced Scrappy after Lennie left, and he voiced Scooby from the star. And then while Scott Innes was voicing Scooby in animation, he voiced live-action Scrappy, even though he didn't do live-action Scooby). So if the franchise is trying to be kind to Scrappy and keep him around in some form, using Frank's Fred to disparage him is probably the worst way to do it. Also, controversial yet brave opinion; I love Don's Scrappy, but Scott's Scrappy is the best. He's the perfect blend of Lennie's obnoxious and pugnacious Scrappy, and Don's childlike and innocent Scrappy. I'd love to hear Frank's take on Scrappy, though.

I'm glad that the majority here has a positive or neutral view on him simply for the fact that there is a lot of great Scooby content through the Scrappy years that deserve a chance that the people who hate Scrappy probably won't give it

When I was growing up I didn't like the cartoons with him in and didn't like the Scooby stuff without the whole gang. Oddly enough I was happy to watch the Godzilla cartoon with Godzuki in it which was shown about the same time (I think).

The vignettes are my guilty pleasure. They're so innocently nonsensical, I am thoroughly endeared.

I'm glad that the majority here has a positive or neutral view on him simply for the fact that there is a lot of great Scooby content through the Scrappy years that deserve a chance that the people who hate Scrappy probably won't give it It also doesn’t help that Scooby and Scrappy Season 1, The New Scooby and Scrappy-Doo Show, The New Scooby-Doo Mysteries and The 13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo are either not talked about, not on syndication anymore, or not even available on home media. You’d either have to be a completionist or stumble upon them on Boomerang. The four seasons that show him in a favorable light are some of the most obscure Scooby media out there. I bet more people associate him with the vignettes and the movie trilogy (which is also good, but suffers from Daphne missing again).

Honestly Scrappy is one of my favorite Scooby Doo characters alongside Daphne, Crystal, and Amber. I've just always been a fan of Scrappy ever since I was a kid, and ironically The Scooby Doo movie only made me like him more.

I think if they reintroduced him nowadays, he'd have to be a foil for one of the V-F-D trio. The 80's and Scooby Apocalypse teamed him up with Daphne, and I think that dynamic would still work. But since The New Scooby-Doo Mysteries started pushing him towards the child genius trope, I think he'd be an excellent companion for Velma. Scooby and Shaggy bring the comedic relief, Fred and Daphne do the legwork (and bring the romantic drama depending on the storyline), and then Scrappy and Velma are the ones who actually solve the mystery. Hell, Scrappy and Velma could bounce theories and ideas off of each other, giving us more insight into their thought processes. It’s been a year and a half and I still fully believe this. Heck, I forgot I’d written this and when the idea popped into my head last week, I thought I’d figured something out. 🤣 To go even deeper into this, Apocalypse showed a Velma who was out of touch with humanity, and a Scrappy that had lost his. Since both are portrayed as geniuses, and Velma keeps being portrayed anywhere between socially awkward and outright antisocial, I think teaming them together would serve as a link for both of them to retain their humanity despite being so intelligent. It’s even shown in Apocalypse that Velma would constantly play with and pet Scrappy before he eventually got his implants, she’d even let him nap on her workstation. Using this dynamic would leave intact the Shaggy and Scooby comic relief and the Fred and Daphne romantic tension. With Fred, you could easily switch Scrappy’s hero worship of Scooby to Fred. He can still love Scooby, but Fred is everything Scrappy wants to be: big, brave, strong, a leader. I noticed that in the live-action movie, everything bad about Scrappy, he’d learned from Fred; being egocentric, being sexist, having toxic masculinity, being possessive of Daphne. All things Fred unlearned over both movies. So if Scrappy can be a mirror to Fred when they’re both toxic, why can’t he be a mirror of Fred in a positive way? Not to mention, Scrappy has his own Gang of puppies in New York City, while Be Cool Fred is always trying to instill mystery solving education on his teammates. That incarnation of Fred would be a perfect match with a Scrappy who’s eager to learn. With this dynamic, you obviously keep the Shaggy and Scooby comic relief and the Daphne and Velma girl power, but it could also be like A Pup Named Scooby-Doo where Scrappy is the one cataloguing all the clues instead of Scooby and recites them at the end of an episode like Velma did. If they went this route, it’d have to be for younger-aimed show, obviously. And then, we know that in both classic canon and Apocalypse canon, Daphne and Scrappy are a great team. They’re the compassionate ones, they’re the fighters, they’re the ones who aren’t afraid to jump into danger. Especially 80’s and What’s New Daphne, who is literally a world-class black belt. Keeping this dynamic intact would, as mentioned twice already, keep the Shaggy and Scooby comic relief and also keep Fred and Velma together as the brains of the operation. Daphne and Scrappy could be the ones to interview suspects and save potential victims from the monsters. Be the personable ones and the ones in danger, but not being damsels or victims that need rescuing, y’know? I could never see the franchise breaking up Shaggy and Scooby and mixing up the dynamics with them and the others, but I even see ways you could team Scrappy up with either of them. I mean, with almost 100 adventures where the three of them were by themselves, that one isn’t that hard to do 🤣 Sorry for the super long message, but as you guys can see, I’m very passionate in my love for Scrappy and I miss him. The potential is there to easily redeem him for old fans and endear him to new ones, I don’t get the hesitation.
