Well, the original Scooby-Doo format was restarted in 1976 to 1978 in what's now called the Scooby-Doo Show. So they made more of those, just changing the official title a couple times.
As to why they stopped in 1979 there's actually an interesting link to the guy who created Scrappy-Doo explaining what was going on at Hanna Barbera at the time, and why they changed the show around after SDWAY? Season 3. I'll see if I can find it and post it here. Really interesting reading, though I don't agree with some of his analysis.
I'm not sure why they stopped making WNSD? though.

Here's that link I mentioned. (Originally posted by SpiderScooby) Though I just had trouble trying to access it so maybe it's no good now. Not sure, but I think it will help answer your question if you can link to it. www.povonline.com/scrappydays/scrappy01.htm

Yes, thank you. This was a fascinating read. I had no idea how much a writer had to go through for a children's cartoon script. Those S & P people are beyond insane. I maintain that Action For Children's Television (ACT for short) ruined those great Saturday morning superhero shows of the late 60's because of the so-called "violence" garbage they said would occur to kids who watched it. I vaguely remembered watching them, and turning out pretty OK. But I still hate Scrappy, though I'm a tad more sympathetic to him now.

I found this bit on Wikipedia.
"What's New, Scooby-Doo? aired for three seasons on The WB Television Network's "Kids' WB" programming block as a half-hour program, before being put on an indefinite hiatus in 2005."
I think WB wanted to take the series in a different direction for whatever reason. I know Get A Clue was canceled becuase KidsWB was about to change to CW4Kids, so all the shows that were airing during the KidsWB block either moved to another network or were dropped.

I think that they should bring back WNSD after there done with SDMI like they did with SDWRU. WNSD was a great show and it seemed kind of like SDWRU but with modern mysteries and updated graphics.

And I think the gang were adults as well, right, as opposed to them being teenagers? Wasn't WNSD? the first Scooby series to show them as such?

I'm guessing the end of the grand Mr. E plot will end up being a new grand mystery for next season. One of those endings that resolves one mystery but raises new questions. Or maybe a completely new grand mystery. Either way I don't think the series will end when they solve the mystery of the first Mystery Inc. (man, that's a lot of 'mystery') I figure it'll keep running as long as people are watching. Or until one of the major castmembers gets tired of playing the part and decides to leave the show to avoid being typecast. Mark

Yeah but I do hope they can fix the animation style in season 2 to the old form and maybe change the mysteries to what they used to be and not some educational program with every detail around the mystery trying to be woven into a grand plot.

I actually really want it to stay. We just got used to the animation. And I like the mysteries, I think they are some of the best yet
