This was posted elsewhere and I have no idea when it got there or who gave it to them. But looks like the itunes description has given full credence to the captain being a demon chest ghost.

Not sure, but I doubt they would have changed it from the original.

WB can't decide which Ship of Ghouls retcon they're sticking with. The Scooby-Doo Encyclopedia clearly states that the Cyclone Ghost is one of the 13.

The Cyclone Ghost wouldn't make any logical sense as one of the 13 ghosts though. It's just a combo of Maldor, Zomba, Morbidia and the Mirror Demon when they're released from the Demon Chest.

It makes just as much sense as it being the recently deceased ship captain

I think the new origin gave the wiggle room for that though. He could be ancient himself but his gimmick has always been taking people out to sea to their demises. He used the Queen Myrtle again to try to trap Scooby because he needed a ship on short notice. I assume the people on that ship would probably become his minions similar to Phantazmo.
However I suppose we might have a new fanfiction idea from this concept.....what were these guys minions doing all the time their bosses were locked up?

I'm sure they have. iTunes is very off with their Scooby-Doo descriptions.

The 13 Ghosts, in general, were vaguely defined and often felt like an afterthought. Like, what was Rankor's deal? The worst thing we see him do is steal someone's glasses. Or Zimbulu? He doesn't even cause the episode's main conflict.

Before I wondered if maybe the actual origin was that they were just specific demons who got on Vincent's way and he put them in the chest. But now it looks like we passed the buck to King Solomon on exactly what they all did to be so dangerous. Since I agree some don't really seem like they were that dangerous in the first place.
I already tweeted to Tim Sheridan a joking tweet about how to explain that. We're lucky Hanna Barbera has another set of meddling kids that got lost in biblical times. Hopefully they were there to have seen them get caught the first time. Not that I expect WB to let him write that movie anytime soon. But we now live in a world of a Banana Splits horror movie and a Batman/TMNT crossover movie. So from here on out i'm just going to ramble crazy ideas and hope one of them actually happens.

Does the captain actually ever blatantly state that he died 50 years ago? It's been a while since I've seen the episode, but I felt like he just said the passengers and the ship went down 50 years ago. Maybe he was a ghost already at the time the ship sunk, or as one of the 13 ghosts, maliciously sunk the ship to claim victims? (though he couldn't say that in front of the passengers). Either way, I still feel that him being one of the 13 ghosts is somewhat less offensive than calling the Cyclone Ghost one of the 13. It doesn't make logical sense that they would open the chest, and the four ghosts in there would combine into a fifth ghost? Like, what was Rankor's deal? The worst thing we see him do is steal someone's glasses. Lol so true.

From the demons perspective, i'd argue the combined form is a better way for them to escape. They bust out together and then go their separate ways. If they all go out separately someone (especially the weaker ones) might be targeted if someone like Vincent Van Ghoul is around.
We also would note at least Zomba, Time Slime and the captain (if he is one) showed some concern for wanting to free their fellow spirits. So there's some honor among thieves there. Then again if I was locked up in some crummy box for centuries with only 12 other people to talk to, I'd probably be a bit friendly with them too even if otherwise we didn't agree on much.
