Hello, just another new member here since this is the go-to place for Scooby Doo discussion.
I was born in 1990 so my experience with the franchise probably differs a lot from those of you who were with the franchise from the beginning. The first Scooby Doo show I saw as a kid was Scooby Doo Where Are You? It was on all the time when I was younger, I think it was on CN or TBS or possibly both. I got hooked on the show immediately. The iconic theme song had me from the beginning. I loved the spooky atmosphere and villains like the Creeper. It was just an all around great show for little me.
The next show I was exposed to was The New Scooby Doo Movies which, while okay, I didn't like as much. Part of it was because it wasn't as spooky as WAY, but a big part of it was I had no idea who most of those celebrities were and why they were such a big deal. It had some celebrities I recognized like The Three Stooges, Don Knotts, Batman, The Addams Family, etc. But for the most part, I had no attachment to the celebs so the formula got old quickly. Luckily, this was a period where pretty much all of the Scooby Doo series were in constant reruns.
To be honest, I don't know what the title of the next show I saw was called. All I know is that it had Scrappy and most of the gang was barely in it at all. All I know for sure is that it wasn't 13 Ghosts. Anyway, I didn't like it. I found Scrappy extremely annoying. I hated is voice, his awful catch phrases, and most of all that he got so much screentime and overshadowed everyone else.
After that, I think I saw Ghoul School and Reluctant Werewolf which were not what I was looking for. I just don't find Shaggy, Scooby, and Scrappy interesting enough to watch by themselves.
After that, I vaguely recall seeing a show with Shaggy, Scooby, Scrappy, and Daphne in some weird jumpsuit. It don't remember much about the show, but I remember Daphne being something I liked. But it wasn't enough to keep me interested.
After that, I mostly stuck to watching repeats of WAY, though I never really turned off The New Scooby Doo Movies when it was on. I grew to appreciate it more because it had the original gang who I love.
Somewhere along the way I saw a couple episodes of 13 Ghosts, which I noped out of pretty quickly.
My interest in Scooby Doo was waning until I saw A Pup Named Scooby Doo. I'm pretty sure it was also in reruns when I saw it, but I loved it. The original gang was back, and to top it off the show was hilarious. What I remember the most about the show is Fred always convinced the villain was Red Herring and Daphne always calling in her butler. Jenkins!
From then on, I don't remember having much to do with Scooby Doo until around 2000 or so, when I saw Scooby Doo on Zombie Island. Holy crap, I swear that changed my perception of the franchise forever. Zombies! Real zombies! It was especially amazing for me because I grew up watching the Romero zombie movies and the Return of the Living Dead movies with my dad. So when the zombies were real it was a real treat for me. Sure, I found the first half hour or so of the movie boring, but when things picked up on the island it got amazing. Also, I loved the music. "It's terror time again!" And is was amazing to see the original gang again instead of just Shaggy, Scooby, and Scrappy.
I immediately located the next movie Witches Ghosts, which was good too. I liked the ghost being real again and loved the Hex Girls.
Unfortunately, the next movies Alien Invaders and Cyber Chase were pretty bad and made me lose interest. The writing just wasn't as good and there were no real stakes like there were in Zombie Island and Witches Ghost.
After that I kind of ignored the franchise for a while. I knew about Whats New Scooby Doo on KidsWB but never went out of my way to watch it. I think I was too into Yu-Gi-Oh and X-Men: Evolution at the time to give it a shot. Especially since the two previous movies turned me off of Scooby Doo pretty hard. (Note: I just started watching Whats New Scooby Doo last night, and I only watched the first 6 episodes so far but its alright. I like the mysteries so far, even if the atmosphere isn't really spooky. The modernization is interesting. So far I'm liking Fred and Daphne.)
I completely ignored Shaggy & Scooby Doo Get A Clue. Horrible art, and no Fred, no Daphne, and no Velma? No thanks.
The next thing I saw was the live-action movie which I hated. Making Fred a jerk, breaking up the gang, SMG's acting, the fart jokes. Ugh. The only good thing that came out of that mess was Matthew Lillard as Shaggy.
After that, my next exposure to the franchise (other than parodies on Robot Chicken) was years later when SDMI got pretty much universal acclaim on the internet. I was hesitant to watch give my last few exposures to the main franchise. But I ended up loving it. A darker and serialized Scooby Doo was not what I was expecting, but it was so different that it worked. Making Fred a trap obsessed goof, Shaggy and Scooby being less of gluttons and being a bit more well rounded, Daphne being more complex than I was used to seeing, and Velma was hit or miss. I did not like the Shaggy romance. Of course, after I got all caught up I had to wait a year to see the rest because of CN's scheduling incompetence.
After SDMI ended and I saw the promo art for Be Cool, Scooby Doo.... I was horrified. Then hearing that it would focus more on the comedy than the mystery or spookiness... I was pretty angry lol. SDMI had made a huge fan out of me again and I wanted more like it. I watched the first two episodes when it premiered and wasn't impressed. However, just this week I decided to give the show another chance and have seen a few more episodes and liked them more than I thought I would. I wouldn't say I'm a fan exactly, not yet, but it would seem like waiting a long time after watching SDMI to try and get into BCSD is best. It gave me plenty of time to say goodbye to SDMI and accept that its gone and that a new show was on and trying something different.
I heard they are already recording a new series (Be Cool is over already?!), does anyone have any idea what its about?
Anyway, that is basically my entire history with the Scooby Doo franchise (though I also remember a Johnny Bravo crossover and a newer Batman crossover). I look forward to discussing all things Scooby Doo here.
I hope this post wasn't too long.
