Fresh off having watched this one last night, I think it's safe to say it's clearly a part of the trend, but i'm not going to be surprised if it's not everyone's style.
By this I mean, for one thing this is probably the closest we get to see adult Fred, like his A Pup Named Scooby Doo era obsession phase. Except as you may expect it's not on conspiracy theories, it's his new thing to poke fun at, being obsessed with nets. This may annoy some people, but i found the ridiculous of this part pretty funny.
There's also some interesting odes to Scooby's past to be found as expected.
If anything the only thing i found a bit troubling about this special is the mystery part. I mean the monster looks cool, the plot plays out fine, but the end motive to me seems just more for the sake of having a special that's more on the silly side. Which is something I wouldn't say as "bad", but just not really what i was expecting.
Overall a fun special to me, but like I said it might not be everyone's cup of tea.

I got my copy of the DVD on Saturday, and based on some of the online reviews I've seen of this special, I was pleasantly surprised. I can't put my finger on it, but this episode felt like a throwback to one of the older series, which is a good thing, and something I've noticed before. To me, 'Spooky Scarecrow' reminded me of a cross between the original SDWAY and SDMI, and 'Mecha Mutt' felt like an episode of WNSD, both in tone and plot. 'Beach Beastie' throws me back to something that would've come from the 'Scooby Doo Show' era. Don't ask me why, though. Yes, the Fred storyline got a little old, but it did open up for some decent Daphne-Velma leadership. Oh, and the fact that Adam West is in it only improves it. Compared to the series of specials that have come before, I'd put this on-par with 'Scarecrow'. None of them have had particularly deep plots, even for a 22-minute offering, so I'll primarily grade on production and visuals. The art style has been improved greatly over 'Mutt' and 'Goal', but it's not as stunning as the Olympic and Christmas specials. Oh, and I forgot to mention the SDMI reference. Fred's living in the same house in this special as on the show.

Got the DVD last night and watched it. It was better than I expected, after reading some pretty bad reviews. The net plotline with Fred did get a bit old, but at some parts, it was funny. What I actually enjoyed a little was the Scooby/Shauna sub-plot and Shaggy's jealousy over it, but the dogs' relationship eneded it such a silly way. Much more could be done, even to break them up. On the other hand, I loved the ability of the monster to shape-shift, and hearing Adam West as Daphne's uncle was great! He so reminded me of the Jared Moon from "Aloha Scooby-Doo". Maybe because both characters were voiced by West... Overall, an interesting special, not as summer-y as I expected, and definitely not as good as the first specials.

Thanks to scoob16 for lending me the DVD set, I watched the special last night. I can't say I was thrilled. I was pumped up at first but my excitement blew off towards the ending. A cool new special arrives, all summery and with such an adorable opening but then the motive of the villain is what makes it plainly decent instead of splash-tacular to my eyes. (In addition with the fact that... It's not so summery. The gang is wearing their casual clothes and there's no time given to them for relaxation at the beach. They are mainly into Daphne's uncle's Mall or...hotel or resort or whatever that is...) I agree it was a throwback to the 'never-too-old': Fred-Net obsession and the Scooby-amore with Shauna and luckily instead of repetitive that made it funnier!! But I also agree that the motive our villain had was thin... Making him a 'wackadoo' civilian rather than a mean guy with solid purposes. This worries me since I fear that ideas are running out, but then again it might just be made this way on purpose to be a light-hearted summer special, filled with entertainment. I believe much more could be done with this special and I was a tiny bit disappointed. It is nothing like the first specials but nevertheless if you are a Scooby fan you'll give this one a watch.

Finally watched it today. I really liked this one...it sort of felt like a WNSD episode to me. The monster was cool-looking, and although most of the reviews I've read said that the Fred trap-obsession got old and tired, I actually didn't mind that part (reminded me of SDMI). Speaking of SDMI, the Jones Manor reference was so cool! I was glad the animation was better in this special! I was really worried it was going to be bad like "Ghastly Goals," but I was pleasantly surprised. Overall, a pretty good special but I'd say "Spooky Games" and "Haunted Holidays" still top this one for me. Oh, and Shaggy does a great Scooby voice!

It's not my favorite special, but it was still reslly good.
The animation was much better than some of them, which is a great thing. The animation reminded me of Batman: The Brave and the Bold, I don't know why though.
The monster was really cool, but a little unrealistic. But then again, not many monsters are. Which I was totally fine with.
I felt it would work better as a 45 minute special (like TNSDM) so some part could be expanded on, like the rival resort.
I was totally fine with Fred's obsession as well, but if this continued in a TV series it would become old.
Overall I give it 8 Scooby Snacks out of 10!
