This was one of the best Scrappy episodes! Even if it didn't include any monster, it still was good. I liked how Scrappy had his own gang, Duke and Annie, they sure were fun characters. I only wished we had seen more of them.

I wasn't a fan of this episode. It felt too Tom and Jerry for me.

In a way this was probably a test for a spinoff that never happened. With Duke and Annie being Scrappy's buddies. I guess i'd imagine it would have been like a Shirt Tales show? Of course Scrappy would later get paired with Yabba Doo.
I remember being at first confused by this episode, as it was quite different. Yet not exactly different enough like how the next incarnation would take the show, nor completely silly like Scooby Goes Hollywood. So i think this episode marks one of those occasions we can enjoy seeing Scooby involved in a different kind of story.
Also like the title as a reference to The Ransom of Red Chief.

After watching it recently it's become one of my favorites. It was hilarious how the guy's were trying to get money from the studios that owned Scooby lol.
I gotta admit, it was more of a riot seeing poor Scooby and shaggy constantly fall into the trap due to the pups who were trying to rescue them, instead they were causing more mayhem than good for our heroes lol.
Over all, one of my favorites with scrappy in them.

I have this on iTunes. I'm going to watch it with fresh eyes. It's admittedly been years.

It looks like they were testing out what they would do with Scooby for the following three seasons. (Freddy and the girls make only a brief appearance at the beginning and end of the episode, leaving the body of the story to Shaggy, Scooby and Scrappy with a different plot than the standard mystery format.) I imagine Scrappy's friends may have been something thry were looking into, but then decided to go with just Scooby, Scrappy and Shaggy afterward. Shaggy and Scooby had by now become basically the comedy relief of the gang, sent by the others to be chased by the ghost, and Scrappy was their new partner (who like Fred and Vellma before, would keep them from running away and abandoning the msystery altogether).
What's interesting is the unusual attempt at realism in the subway scenes. The entrance is marked "Concourse-6th Ave-Brighton Express" (the real life "D" train route until 2001. The B line later began following much of the route in 2004). On a wall in the station is a sign reading "B, D, F, KK" (the real life 6th Avenue trains, except that the K or KK had been discontinued a few years before this cartoon was made, and is now covered by the current M). The train they ride has "BB" on the bulkhead route sign. The BB had been changed into the "B" route about 12 years earlier. The destination sign next to the route sign reads "6TH AV EXPRESS". The token has the "Y" on it. Hanna and Barbera had earlier offered similar realistic views of New York (including its subway) in the 1945 Tom & Jerry classic "Mouse in Manhattan".
Also, with Fred and the girls appearing so briefly as it is, Velma ends up with no speaking lines. She is totally silent.

I wasn't a fan of this episode. It felt too Tom and Jerry for me. Same here, probably my least favorite Scrappy episode.

It's really funny, but I wish there had been a monster. I'm actually glad they didn't make the villain a monster. It adds variety. Not every Scooby episode should involve investigating a mystery with a guy in a monster mask.

While I appreciate the writers trying to do something a bit different, and the fact that we get to see some friends from Scrappy's past, I can't say I particularly cared for this episode. It wasn't bad, but it has a lot of problems that the Scooby and Scrappy Doo show, in particular the overreliance on "coincidental slapstick". I guess it's entertaining to watch, but it's hardly the best.

it was experimenting with ideas for in essence a Scrappy spinoff that never happened.. Had kinda a secret six vibe to it..

I guess I've always thought it was trying to test out if fans liked Shaggy/Scooby/Scrappy on their own enough without the gang, kind of a "test run" so to speak of how fans would react to the next series without Fred, Velma or Daphne.

I want to say it's a voice which also appears in the Pound Puppy show.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pound_Puppies_(1986_TV_series)I believe it's this show which has a character who sounds like her. I could be wrong. It's been years. Edit: Ruth Buzzi? She only has these listed for Scooby Doo though: The New Scooby-Doo Mysteries (TV Series) Mrs. Muffinstuffer / Katerina Kobald / Evil Elf - The Nutcracker Scoob (1984) ... Mrs. Muffinstuffer (voice) - The Night of the Living Toys/South Pole Vault (1984) ... Katerina Kobald / Evil Elf (voice) That's my guess. Not sure if it's her though. Edit: ehh, listening now and they don't sound similar.
