Really nice episode. The Ape Man is among my favorite villains. What do you guys think?

I wouldn't say he's my favorite villain, but it was a good episode.

Very fun episode, and the Ape Man was a neat villain. I think he was the only villain that Casey Kasem voiced... Remember the parrot that constantly said "Stick 'em up! What's the password?" (hope someone remembered to feed that parrot since they just left it on the set after quitting the movie!) Scooby also showed quite a bit of courage when he was saving Candy Mint (who reminded me quite a bit of Penelope Pitstop) from the Ape Man. But maybe at the time, Scooby thought it actually was the stuntman and didn't think the Ape Man could be real? And you do have to wonder how he got a rubber Scooby-Doo mask. It's likely he had a makeup artist on the set make one. I actually plan to commission such a mask in the future, maybe out of silicone, though the one I currently have is good enough:
(I suppose if Daphne's uncle Maxwell saw this, he'd say "Now THERE'S real talent!") Still better than J.C. Chasez's impersonation of Scooby-Doo in the Valentine's Day special, I say!
Still a classic in my book.

The movie set setting was pretty genius and I liked that the title of the film was "The Apeman of Forbidden Valley", certainly sounds like it would fit along with 1950's B sci-fi horror films of that time.
The Ape-Man introduction scene in the opening freaked me out as a kid (Hoyt Curtin's score certainly helps), and I liked the way they caught the Ape-Man.
Also I'm pretty sure that's Vic Perrin doing the voice of The Ape-Man and not Casey Kasem, though I'm not 100% sure about that.

Also I'm pretty sure that's Vic Perrin doing the voice of The Ape-Man and not Casey Kasem, though I'm not 100% sure about that. It did sound like Casey Kasem to me doing Carl the Stuntman's voice. He did some incidental voices on the series instead of just Shaggy (remember Lt. Tomoro of "A Tiki Scare is No Fair?") Not all his voices sound like Shaggy, but I can still recognize his voice. Odd they had Kasem voice Carl/the Ape Man in this one; maybe they didn't want it to sound too monotonous if Don Messick did the voice (as he was also already voicing Maxwell), and John Stephenson was probably busy with something else (he did a TON of voices for Hanna-Barbera, as I mentioned before.) Though it could be possible Vic Perrin did the Ape Man's vocal effects, while Casey Kasem did Carl's real voice (a case of "Cast as a Mask," according to TV Tropes.) And speaking of masks, once my new Rubies' latex Scooby-Doo mask comes in this week, I'll also get one of those "gorilla torso" shirts and hands and then do a photo recreating the phony mirror scene!

Yeah, but Kasem wasn't a particularly versatile voice actor in terms of range (nothing against his voice acting, it's good, I'm just pointing that out), I could usually recognize when he was doing a voice on the show, since they tended to be a variation on his own voice, and Carl doesn't sound like any voice Kasem ever did. If Carl is Kasem, then he was a more versatile voice actor then I expected. However, I definitely think that's Vic Perrin as The Ape-Man, he also apparently did the growls for The Snow Ghost, and they both sound very familiar. BTW, at that mask, nice. I wish I had more Scooby related merchandising then I do, but oh well! That mirror scene is a classic, and you're recreation video of it was very well done.

You're probably right; it's possible Kasem did the Carl voice, and Vic Perrin did the Ape Man's growling effects. Like I said, it's a case of "Cast as a Mask," as TV Tropes calls it (when someone else does the disguised voice of a character impersonating someone else.) I remember a couple of websites initially said John Stephenson had voiced Maxwell and Carl, but I know that's not true. They both sound NOTHING like Stephenson, as I've been able to easily recognize his voices from the various other Scooby-Doo episodes he was in, along with Mr. Slate of "The Flintstones" (perhaps his most famous cartoon voice role.)

If John Stephenson had voiced Carl, then we wouldn't even be having this conservation, ha-ha!
I'm not really sold on Carl being Shaggy (still sounds like Vic Perrin, think The Puppetmaster from The Backstage Rage), but given how cartoons back then didn't give actual voice credit to the characters, it's really hard to say who's really who for some of the additional characters, anyway. Heck Hal Smith could have voiced him.

UPDATE: After watching the episode again, and then also watching "The Backstage Rage," I am now 99% sure Vic Perrin did Carl the Stuntman's real voice as well (I could hear a bit of Pietro the puppeteer in it as well). I do have to wonder if Jean Vander Pyl really did voice Candy Mint, though. It did sound a little higher than the voices I'm used to hearing her do (like Wilma Flintstone or Rosey the Robot.) It could've been Stefanianna Christopherson doing a Southern belle voice, but for now, I am pretty sure it's Jean voicing her, as she could probably pull off a voice like that. BTW, I had a bit more fun relating to this episode using my Scooby-Doo suit and mask, and my ape costume, and Adobe Photoshop... It's only fair, as Scooby DID wear the Ape Man's mask in the episode...

This was a fun episode. The outdoor movie set was fun. The Apeman was alright but the scenes in the house were a lot of fun
