Since I first watched this episode as a kid, I've always thought of this episode to be the first episode with a 'darker' tone. The villain was a lot creepier, the plot was darker, and even the background music has sort of an eerie, darkish tone. Does anyone else agree/think this too?

I agree. I remember when I first watched this episode, I was about 5 and my nan bought it for me, and it came with like 5 other of the "spookiest" episodes on vcr (this was in 2001 or 2002 haha) and I found it quite scary haha.

I also agree. The vampire/monsters seem more detailed and creepy-looking then other episodes.

Another creepy part was when the phone rang, and Lisa changed.... (I don't want to spoil anything)

SPOILER ALERT ---------- SPOILER ALERT ----------- SPOILER ALERT
I like this episode, but I have a few questions:
At the end of the episode, we know that whenever the watch makes the ringing noise, Lisa thinks she is a vampire, because she was hypnotized. After Lisa gives Scooby, Scooby-Dum and Shaggy the burgers and leaves the room, Shaggy uses his "new" watch to make the ringing noise, and Scooby-Doo pretends to be hypnotized. But, even if Lisa was in a different room, wouldn't she still "turn" into a vampire?
Also, whatever happened to the first three characters we met? The guy by the bridge, the guy behind the desk, and the guy who carries the coffin with Shaggy into a different room? What were the coffins doing there in the first place?

You're right, those three never showed up in the rest of the episode, but for the captain and the desk clerk, I can understand. Mr. Dracul was prime suspect of the case, yet he never showed up again. The coffins, as Fred explained to Shaggy, were there for some kind of convention, if I remember correctly.

I do agree with you Doo! This was a very dark episode. The vampire got close to catching Shaggy and Scooby many times - when I say close I mean physically close. The part where the entire room was dark and then they turn the light on and there he was - totally freaky. Also when he's just looming in the tunnel when Fred, Velma and Daphne are on the search. Not to mention the creepy bell ringing over the phone. There's something extra sinister about vampires in general.

No, Where Are You had already darker episodes, and still is the darkest version of Scooby-Doo. This episode though is maybe the creepiest in the Scooby-Doo Show in contention with Harum Scarum Sanitarium.

The darkest early Scooby episode is the Creeper. The bank guard actually suffered a real injury from a ghost, and then they leave him with the person who caused it!

That's a very good point - very rarely does someone actually get seriously injured on the show. I remember seeing another thread about this somewhere.

Scooby Doo Where Are You had a lot of dark episodes but after that it was toned down. A couple examples: Night of Fright, Bedlam, Hassle, Hyde, and Space Kook. This along with Harum Scarum were the first ones in awhile to go back to truly scaryo

I was obsessed with this episode as a child and I suffered pretty bad nightmares but couldn’t stop watching it! The bells and creepy phone calls, crawling through the ducts, looming over Daphne in bed, the laugh! The Scooby-Doo show had spectacularly creepy villains, and great story lines. They don’t make cartoons like this anymore 😢

This is definitely one of the darkest, but I think my choice for the first dark episode of Scooby Doo goes to What the Hex Going On. However, with the exception of Harum Scarum Sanitarium, this was the darkest episode up until the point this one came out
