Though the miner and mystery may not be the greatest, the abandoned Western ghost town was an amazing setting. The mine car and howling was great too.

This PSA from Operation Lifesaver brought this episode to mind...
Besides the "train" fakeout, this is useful information if you are planning to film a reenactment of this episode and the bit with Scooby and Shaggy pretending to be a train. But even if you're not filming, what Shaggy and Scooby did is DEFINITELY a "Don't try this at home" stunt!

Im not biggest fan of the villain but the secondary characters here are creepy and are a great addiction, as well as the setting.

It looks like Velma is wearing pink lipstick in the beginning of the episode. It could just be an error. Regardless, errors and such in old shows like this are no problem.
Also, what were they doing driving around there at night(?)
Things like this make them so much fun to watch.

In this case, I believe Scooby or Shaggy got them lost. Fred doesn't ask for directions, so they end up driving to the wrong place. This happens all-too-frequently for the gang, haha!
Velma's lips go pink once in a while in this season. Seems like it happens in the Snow Ghost episode, too. Watch Shaggy's hair in A Clue For Scooby-Doo; it's the biggest animation mistake of the whole series, I would say. It's hard to say why this happens, be it a rushed timeframe to do the coloring or they run out of ink. I have no idea. There's a small chance that it was written that way, but a much larger chance that it was a mistake. There's a Teen Titans Go episode that makes fun of these sorts of animation errors.

Thank you. I have to catch more "Teen Titans Go", haven't watched them in a while.

A bit of a mixed bag. On the one hand, Gold City and the haunted mine make for very effective locales for the gang to explore. On the other, the mystery isn't all that interesting and the villain is just an old guy with a beard. I know the Miner 49'er has somehow became one of Scoobys most legendary adversaries but he doesn't actually do all that much in this episode. I do like the clues, found throughout the case and the gangs trap is pretty inventive. All in all, a solid - if forgettable - episode, in a series jam-packed with greatness.
Mystery - 7.5/10 Villain - 7/10 Setting - 8.5/10
Overall Score - 7.5/10

The ghost town itself is spookier than the miner, but that makes for a memorable setting. This episode inspired me to research old ghost towns, and hopefully when I get the chance, I can visit a few.

I like this better than Ghastly Ghost Town. It runs tighter and less filler. Gold City is unique to look at and the Miner 49ner is an interesting villain. It's not my favorite but i like it.

Plot: Definitely a solid mystery. I enjoyed how the gang searched for clues in the mines. The secondary charcacters were kinda creepy 8/10 Set Up: One of the best in the series. The ghost town was awesome. 10/10 Monster: I didn't find the miner so lame. He was scary at moments, but in the end, he was just an old man. 6/10
BONUS (not counting in the final score unless it is 7/10 or more) Nostalgia Boost:For some reason, I didn't watch it with the other episodes as a child, and my first time watching it was as a teenager. I have no nostalgia for it at all.
Overall, it was a solid but somewhat forgettable episode with a great setting.
Final Score: 8/10

Feel like I've underrated this one for years now. I just rarely ever watch it and genuinely forgot how creepy and atmospheric it was. The comedy is top notch but these early episodes tend to just have an extra layer of spookiness to them, which kinda got lost as the years went on.
