This movie and Zombie Island are 2 of the best. Of the Early ones, they are best. Later I like Camp Scare most, and all but a couple are quick picks to keep me entertained most any night. Also, this gave us the Hex Girls!!

Did you like Scooby Doo and the Witch's Ghost? It was too politically correct for me. I mean did we really need a lecture on how "witches aren't really evil and its a Earth religion blah, blah, blah." If they wanted to get technical "Wicca" was created by Gerald Gardner in the 1950s. Its not an "old religion" at all. www.angelfire.com/wi2/thetruthaboutwicca/geraldgardner.html

Just watched this the other day and I have to say, I really enjoyed the re-watch. It's definitely one of the better movies, I rate it 2nd in the WB revival behind Zombie Island. To be honest, though, the only thing that I think really makes it better than Alien Invaders, which I recently watched as well, is the presence of Sarah Ravencroft. Tress MacNeille is a VA goddess and she really brought Sarah to life! [SPOILERS!]You could tell that the opening-scene, the gang knee deep into a pretty creepy case we know nothing about, was supposed to invoke that feel of the Moat Monster opening in Zombie Island and I have to say it came pretty darned close. Ben was a pretty interesting character but I knew he would end up being a bad guy from the beginning as soon as I heard him speak. Since when has Tim Curry ever voiced a good guy? I enjoyed the fact that they went to Oakhaven as New England and its witch-lore of a past have always been a source of excitement and interest for me. I always loved learning about that stuff in history and I was really glad that they decided to focus on that here. The Hex Girls were, of course, a very nice inclusion and, while I appreciate their style change for Mystery Inc - one of the only things I like about that cursed show - this was their best portrayal in my opinion. It was new and fresh and everything after seems, to me, to just be beating a dead horse in an attempt to capitalize on our sense of nostalgia and this golden age of Scooby-Doo when the franchise was cool again. The revelation that the town banded together to bring Sarah to life in order to attract tourists to save their businesses and livelihood is very believable and brings a sort of human quality to the movie that I really appreciate. I also enjoyed the fact that Sarah was, actually, a witch; it helped balance out Ben's rambling, which really annoyed me, when she turned on him after he released her. Didn't exactly like how the movie ended, though. The fact that Thorn is "1/16 wiccan on her mother's side" and that she was "the only one" who could return Sarah to the book just didn't jive well with me. I would have liked to see a less perfect and more logical conclusion to the events of the movie. It also bugged me that supposedly the wiccans were strong enough to band together and stop Sarah by trapping her in the book but no one was smart enough to burn it instead of burying it where time could uncover it and anyone could find it. (And apparently anyone could release her.) It's like they were dooming future generations.

Technically this isn't even possible, as Wicca is a religion, and you can't have blood from a religious belief (that would be like saying "I have 1/16 Buddhist blood!", which is ridiculous)

That's basically what I'm saying. The inaccuracy coupled with the fact that the ending solution is just too perfect doesn't sit right with me and really diminishes the quality of the movie. (That and I find that, as I get older, I sort of resent this movie a bit for introducing the Hex Girls in the first place.)
I used to love the Hex Girls and their presence in Witch's Ghost is just amazing but now it's just like they've been thrown into Scooby-media to ride out that golden-age popularity and over time they've been watered down and become uninteresting.

Scooby handling the SWT and persecution and or even Wicca, OR anything with lots of historic accuracy... I don't recall it happening so far, so I can't judge them by not doing it now, or then, being that I love the show so much.
It's just not very conducive to a good storyline, or their storyline they already conceptualized anyway. Also, you have to realize it was a Monsters Real universe. I could ask them that in a Fake Monsters universe.

This movie had a lot of writers. I'm curious who the one was pushing Wicca.

I liked the first half with the fake monster but the rest is pretty boring. I was having trouble finishing it.

But did it give us the Hex Girls? Fully formed yes but in #126 of the 1997 comics we see Velma visiting what could be a prototype for them. I'm not a comic nerd, just looking through some and seeing a lot hints/themes from future shows in that era of comic.

They look a lot less cool anyway
