A little late I know, but I just came across this topic and wanted to share my thoughts on "The Mystery Begins".
Like most of you, I thought it was well cast and I like how they handled it. Much less a parody than the other 2 live-action films. That was my biggest concern...that they'd make fun of it too much...glad they didn't go that route this time.
The only thing I'd change would be to get a little better mix between the humorous side and the creepy/mystery side. The ghosts and main villain were pretty humorous right from the start, and I didn't feel there were many times that they really built up a sense of suspense. I hope any future films will balance that out a little more, without getting too scary of course. To me, the Scooby formula has usually been to have the villain/spook pretty scary at first, and then become progressively less scary and more human as the gang uncover more and more clues and start to solve the mystery. In this movie the ghouls are kinda funny as soon as they appear, and even the music isn't particularly suspenseful.
I keep remembering the "R.L. Stine's Goosebumps" show back in the 90's on Nick. It was still campy and humorous, but could also get pretty creepy and scary when they wanted to. I keep thinking if they could've added a little more of that to "The Mystery Begins", the result would've been more like a 'regular' Scooby episode. What do you guys think?
Overall a small complaint though. I did like this film.

Cartoon Network did trott to much on the safe side of being more humerous than scary. It is annoying and there is a rumer going around about a 4th live action movie and maybe they be confident enough to be a little more like the older one with out making the little ones have nightmares *cough*Zombie Island and Witches Ghost* my faverates when they came out but that was because I was a little older and it was the perfect amount of scaring me fairly badly(I love horror movies) but being ok after the movie. If I had been younger I don't know.

I agree. Zombie Island is one of my faves too, though I agree it's more scary than the average Scooby-Doo. ('Course, ZI has aired on CN before, and considering their other shows like Clone Wars maybe it wouldn't be that out of line?) But it wouldn't have to be all that scary really...if the next one's just a little more spooky, suspensful & mysterious I'll be very happy.
In a way though, maybe "The Mystery Begins" was about right in one way. The storyline and style kinda fits right in the middle of the middle-school age "A Pup Named Scooby-Doo" and the post high-school "What's New Scooby-Doo". Although "A Pup" is pretty much irrelevant in this case I guess.

Another reason they might have made it silly is the fact it's life action.
As for the ages I always thought of them post college, aside from pup which I put them in fifth grade at the oldest. When they mentioned jr. high in one of the episodes I was in denial they just look too little to be 13 year olds.

Just thought of something.
Did anyone else kinda think that "Mystery Begins" almost felt more like a prequel for What's New Scooby-Doo instead of one for the original series?
Just the feel of the show and the modern look...laptops and all. And using WNSD style music and all.
Was curious.

It felt more like a rebooted continuity, at least to me.

I really enjoyed the new movie. I didnt' have the highest hopes when I tuned in Sept 13th on CN to watch the premiere. But as the first commercial started after it came on, I was actually enjoying myselt! The actors were super, and the whole plot-line was okay. I didn't have a problem with their being real ghosts, and I kinda had a feeling that the Principle was the one that did it. lol The whole stamps thing was alittle weird, and very unrealistic, but all that was covered up by the awesome acting! I was so entertained by the kids' acting. They all made me believe they were all 'the gang' and Scooby's CGI yes, could have been better, but besides all that, it was a grade A movie. and I'm sure all SD fans out there will/did like it. My favorite characters were Shaggy and Fred. xD they were both so funny! I recorded it, and I watch it alot now; just to see if I missed anything. Infact, I loved this movie so much, I made a site dedicated to it! ^.^

At the end, I realised that they didn't show Fred with his ascot on atall, maybe they'll do a follow up- a sequel to the prequel - and show them with their trademark outfits! :-P You were right they are doing that. And Fred has a Blonde wig haha

I also felt like Nick Palatas had to force himself to talk like Shaggy. It didn't seem natural, like it did with Matthew Lillard. I wasn't happy with it being more modern (Shaggy said his room has a DVD player and an MP3 player...all of which were not around in the 60's when Scooby was created.) Well each to his own but I really liked Casey Kassem as Shaggy's voice actor. As for the items in Shaggy's room it had to be a modern take on it

Mark I think you mean that Goosebumps aired on Fox, or possibly you might have seen it a few years ago in reruns on Cartoon Network, or possibly Fox Family(correct me if i'm wrong about that one). I don't reallly remember Goosebumps airing on Nick though. But I do agree with you, and you do have some good points there.

the probably with being a prequel is as others have mentioned they shouldn't have dvd players in the 1960s. they still had 45s and record players back then..

I was very happy to find out there would be another live action Scooby movie. I had high expectations going in, and they were met. The cast was excellent yet again, and they were very believable. I would've preferred someone else voicing Scooby, but Frank was okay. The story kept me hooked until the end, with an interesting twist. It really gave off the "Scooby vibe" the entire time. I could really feel the developing friendship between the characters. The Fraphne doesn't bother me, as this is a completely separate universe and it was executed well. Overall, it was a great movie that I highly enjoyed.
