There were various contests over the years, I recall Scooby winning the one Cartoon Network presidency race. And I think he won the Dog Bowl one year.
I don't recall if this one was connected to a contest or not. But back in those years it was more common for Cartoon Network to craft together a theme and bumpers for specific events.

This wasn't really an episode, it was a special that aired with a marathon in 1999. I didn't get the impression that they hated each other, the woods were just getting to them after they got lost. And they weren't killed, they just went missing. This video of it will show more: www.youtube.com/watch?v=6YeDbDZ3oAE&feature=related It was part of the voting contest that Scooby won right? They played Scooby for like a whole weekend. I think it was some sort of voting contest for best cartoon and then they aired a huge marathon of Scooby Doo. If I remember right. Lunchables and such had voting cards you could send in. EDIT: nope I was mixing up something else.

Whyboy finds the mixture of Blair Witch and Scooby-Doo that I'm sure no one was asking for but we got anyway in this CN TV Special. ENJOY

I heard that years ago when they were mock-interviewed on an old CN show, they got out fine and that the worst that happened was that everyone accused them of making a cash-grab off of the Blair Witch project. Edit: The Big Game 2000! That was it! Somewhere around the...53 mark?

That was a strange episode. It was weird, the gang being killed and they hated each other so much. I didn't hate it, but if I had to rate it I'd probably give it a 3/10. The gang NEVER fought the way they sometimes do now then in the older episodes. (At least the ones I've seen) Scooby-Doo is such an old franchise that a lot of the writers probably grew up with Scooby-Doo! From what I've heard the writers are pretty big fans of the show. The gang in the live-action movie fought to the point of disbanding but if the interviews from there are any indication the writer adores them. I wonder what motivates these people to make them act like that. It's not really in character and it's definitely not flattering.

The Blair Witch Project is on Netflix. If you're old enough to watch it, it's actually pretty good.
As for the Scooby characters not getting along, that was to copy Blair Witch. The characters get more and more hostile as their situation worsens in the film.

Easily my favorite Scooby media to date and my favorite incarnation of the gang to date. There were so many hilarious moments in this! And I as well prefer the gang's brother-sister-like bickering here compared to their more hostile arguments in a bit of the more recent Scooby media.

Edit: The Big Game 2000! That was it! Somewhere around the...53 mark? Yup, the gang survived and they were accused of ripping off the Blair Witch Project (which... Duh.). I wish we had an official version, because even the most popular compilation of clips has the uploader admitting he didn't know the correct order of all of the clips and didn't use them all. I've heard that there is an official, full-length version that makes the rounds on rare DVD's at cons, but I guess no one's ever uploaded it.

Or which cons it’s most prominent to?

IIRC didn't they air all the segments in one half hour spot at the end of the marathon? I recall they did that for Night of the Living Doo and my mind wants me to say they did it with The Scooby Doo Project too.
I think that is probably the version that is not up on youtube but being pirated on fan dvds.

Also, in addition to a clip of Fred confirming that the gang survived The Scooby Doo Project during a Wile E. Coyote cartoon marathon there's also some sort of CN commercial (based on the artstyle) featuring the "true" ending of the special; the gang viciously beating down the Monster, though I can't seem to find a link to the full commercial for the life of me.
