I liked this episode, but felt bad for Velma. She became friends with a mermaid, who she kept secret so no one would take her. Then, at the end when she was upset because Amy lied to her and she thought she lost a friend and then Amy said she'd stay in touch. Is Velma really that much of a loner? Seems like she could potentially be a future villain.

If I were her age and she was for real, I'd take her out in a New York Minute. Think what any of you want, but she didn't deserve being treated like that from Shaggy, even for Scooby. Thing is, Velma strikes me as having the most "normal" life of the gang. Her parents have raised her remarkably well. Perhaps this is the reason why she's by herself. The others need each other.

I think taking Scrappy and Flim Flam in this episode was a rip or something because I love those characters. Plus I don't like how Daphne remembers Flim Flam and Scrappy she was like 24 in that series and she's supposed to be 17 in mystery incorporated

watching it on my tablet at this exact moment and i apologize as there is a lot of spoilers!:
Flim flam is in Prison and Scrappy is somewhat the same but the team doesn't want to talk about it! did not know the live action with Sarah michellle gellar was canon! anyway i just paused on Velma's blog scene and here is what i love:
1.love the fact she has a supply of keyboards for her computer. 2.I love the prison guys comment: "I know where you can't get good pizza...IN PRISON! YOU DANG KIDS" loving this. 3. rings up shaggy and get scooby: Scooby put shaggy on the phone...because your impossible to talk to on the phone!
I can't believe this a Velma ep. who is the singer of the siren?
Scooby still has no idea what the sea captain is talking about... do i smell a running gag?
i so get Velma even my mum did not respect my privacy when i was a teenager but then again whose did?
oil spill? really?
i did not see the bad guy coming. Whoa. Even the mermad freaked me a little. Angel is another shocker we were right!!!!

The Fish Freaks wer really cool villains and the plot was original. I somehow suspected that Angel and Cassidy Williams were related. They both have black skin, and you haven't seen any other characters in SDMI with dark skin. I thought Angel was a descendant or something, but I certainly didn't expect them to be the same person!

I hope we'll see more of Scoobys relatives down the line. For instance I wonder how Scooby would react to seeing Scrappy again " Wait Didn't we try to get rid of you?" Maybe, instead of trying to break up Scoobys relations (as he did in Scoobys Swiss Miss) He'd actively try to pair Scooby up ' I already have an Uncle. Why not have an aunt too?" As I recall the poodle from 'Swiss Miss' went from "Hey you're cute" to, "OK, let's get married right now!" in about two hours, which unnerved Scooby. That was why Shaggy&Scrappy intervened. But I guess that could be funny. Oh well, Mystery Inc. is over now. You know, a tiny part of me wonders if maybe there was actually a hidden subplot involving Scrappy taking place in the form of various easter eggs, and that his scene in this episode is just the tip of the iceberg. I mean, for a jab at Scrappy it always struck me as peculiarly executed...especially with how there was one last shot of the statue before cutting to something else...maybe it's just wishful thinking, on the other hand. What do you guys think?

yes theres definitely comedic potential there. although, in the future grouping, i would have it be like this:Scrappy would only periodically appear, Scooby's girlfriend would be a permanent addition. course the big question is, who takes care of Scrappy? having Scooby and his girlfriend serve as de facto parents would be asking a bit much. Stopping professor pericles, while balancing your love life and responsibilies as an adoptive parent.. thats a lot to ask of our favorite mutt.. He did it in the 80's. Minus love interests and evil parrots. (I guess the last two WOULD cause a bit more strain)

Good point. Boo Brothers imo, was the best example of that bond between nephew and Uncle

What I find odd is that Daphne had to be REMINDED by Fred to never speak up of him again. I mean, it's almost like the writers were trying to clue us in on something-I mean, they dedicated about a full 25 seconds to blatantly showing us his statue, with his name printed on the bottom in big ol' letters that anyone can read, AND a lingering shot of his face for good measure! The animators, at least, were definitely not following Fred's advice. On that note, if you rewatch the scene and pay close attention to Daphne's facial expressions they're rather interesting, as her expressions go from surprised, to confused, to lost in Fred's eyes, to sad, regretful, and then slightly hostile. I still have a very strong hunch that there is more to that scene...anyone else see what I'm saying?

Not a favorite of mine, but still overall good enough. The shot at Scrappy was, I guess, well executed enough for what it is but Scrappy jokes are pretty tired overall imo. Definitely the strongest part of this episode was character development for Velma, perhaps one of the most crucial episodes for that, but overall, this is not one I come back to often. A weaker season 1 episode
