This will likely end up being an exercise in futility, but I'm starting this thread to put together any geographical clues from each episode, to try and guess where Crystal Cove might be. Since this is just a cartoon and story needs will likely drive the details, we'll probably end up with a bunch of conflicting clues. But hey, the whole point of the show is to solve a good mystery, so while we're only 2 episodes into the series so far, why not give it a shot? It's possible the writers actually have a general location in mind, so maybe we can guess where it is.
Here's what we've got so far. Please feel free to add anything I've missed.
"SD:MI Chapter 1, Beware The Beast From Below": Not anything definite really, but the word "Cove" in the name suggests it's near a body of water. Not surprising since LOTS of Scooby stories involve sailor ghosts, islands, ghost ships, sea monsters, etc. And something about Daphne's home...the big windows looking outside probably...gave me the impression of a big beachside house, though I don't recall anything to support that otherwise.
Does anyone remember any other visual clues that suggest a seaside town of some sort?
Also, there's mention of a lost colony in the town's history, which also suggests a coastal location, and actually figures into some clues from Chapter 2 below. So moving on.....
"SD:MI Chapter 2, The Creeping Creatures": This one has a definite clue...a native alligator population...or at least there used to be one. I did some checking and the only states that have had native alligator populations within the last 200 years are the south-eastern coastal states, ranging from Texas up through North Carolina. And there really were some areas that were hunted to near-extinction around the time period mentioned in the episode.
Now going back to Chapter 1, here's a possible tie-in. The Outer Banks of North Carolina was the real-life location of England's first attempt at founding a colony. Roanoke. It was founded with a small population, and when ships returned a few years later they had all mysteriously vanished. There was a documentary about it on the History Channel just a few weeks ago. I think it's pretty much known was actually happened to the colonists, but it's made a great story for a few hundred years now. And this is a REALLLLLY big stretch, but, the fictional town of Mayberry was in North Carolina, and the first cameo appearance in SD:MI was Don Knotts.
North Carolina is actually an attractive possibility. It's kinda in the middle of the Atlantic coast, so you can do both summery southern stories, as well as wintry northern stories. And historically you have colonial, revolutionary and civil war sites, as well as a number of good ghost stories. There's both forests and mountains, as well as the ocean and numerous bays, so if the plan is to feature most or all of the stories in Crystal Cove itself, it's not a bad choice.
So for now, my own guess is somewhere near the Outer Bank of NC. That also happens to be a popular tourist area, but not nearly as crowded as most beach areas.
Of course I'm probably missing something, and tonight's episode may blow this out of the water, but we'll see.
Anyone remember anything else to add or have their own theories?
Mark
