Here's an interesting interview with director Brian Levant where he talks about the unmade sequel to Mystery Begins and Curse of the Lake Monster

So CN did want to turn it into a series. I'm glad it didn't happen tbh. I would rather it go somewhere with a bigger budget.

I mean, there's the upcoming SCOOB but I believe this would have happened regardless. By them not turning this into a series we didn't wind up with more better other stuff, we just would up with the stuff we would have gotten anyways, but minus this. Rarely do we ever get more or better content because something didn't get made, we just wind up with less because those things didn't get made. And I always believe more is better than less, assuming more doesn't take away from something better. (Hope that made sense, can't help but feel that was worded oddly.) It's a moot point anyways, but I'd have enjoyed a few more of these films had they made them, I enjoyed those last couple they did for what they were. Felt more true to the franchise then the theatricals did.

Darn. They seemed like they were hinting at Robbie going blond for Fred in a threequel. Would've liked to have seen that cast continue.
