I read an article that said that Fred is a narcissist. He can't possibly be one. We've seen many times that he is fully capable of genuine empathy. A narcissist is basically a variety of psychopath and thus if Fred were a narcissist, he would have absolutely no capacity for empathy. Fred was said to be intolerant of the opinions of others. What are they talking about? He easily tolerates the opinions of Daphne and Velma. He may not agree with Shaggy's opinion on whether or not they should get involved in a mystery but he still tries to be patient with him while keeping him on task. I think Fred would probably be either completely normal or else he'd be on the Asperger's end of the autism spectrum (obviously if he is, then Skip and Peggy clearly got him the help he needed early on enough so that he could grow to have the passable social skills he has now).
If these psychologists would actually pay attention when watching the show they'd see that Fred has more signs of mild Asperger's syndrome than he does of narcissistic personality disorder.
1. His single minded obsession with booby traps and Rube Goldberg devices
2. The fact that while he often has trouble expressing his emotions, he is still capable of feeling them (empathy included)
3. His penchant for inadvertently displaying questionable social skills at times (especially whenever the gang are in a country where English is not the official language).
4. He genuinely cares about his friends and family even if it doesn't always seem that way.
5. His limited repertoire of interests is also a common sign of Asperger's. We haven't really seen him display many interests outside of booby traps, inventing, solving mysteries, sports and camping.
