When i see this movie (for the first time in 2001), i was surprised by Velma's job. I didn't find this was the most improbable thing in the saga, but it's not the job who fit her the best neither...It's a little too...calm and maybe not "bright" enought for her. What do you think about it?

I would have bet on her being a mystery writer not a bookseller.

It's a plot device, just like for the others. It would seem that the writers needed the others to be doing, well not dead-end jobs but the kind of job they they would be willing/able to put aside to join Daphne. Wouldn't have been much of a film if Velma, Shaggy and Scooby had turned down Daphne as they all had more important things to do.

I agree with the plot device angle but even I thought Shaggy and Velma would have followed different paths than the ones given in the film. I see Velma as a CSI type lab tech. She's still solving mysteries but using science! As for Shaggy, I always saw him as living on the fringes; I thought him being a competitive eater (think Joey Chestnut) working the circuit and winning such contests. Scooby naturally would be there for the ride - possibly competing against him or in a tag team.

For some reason I think shaggy should be a cartoonist.
