This was a good episode, the writing was tight and there was none of the 'first show of the first episode' awkwardness that can sometimes be there. It was well paced and the humour was good with some very set scenes. The plot involved Velma attending an interview at Elias Kingston University, while there they get asked to solve the mystery of why the ghost of Elias Kingston has returned to scare off the students.
There is a real Kingston university in London, which I'm happy to say does not appear to be haunted by the ghost of its founder.

Just watched it again and I have to say it was just as good, there is a lot of little bits of humour nice touches that you see on later viewings.. The animation doesn't jar as much as I thought it would but there was nothing there that couldn't have been done with the previous styles. I worked very well, really enjoyed it and when it ended I was really impressed. Which would explain why I found the second episode such a let-down.

How was the music in the first episode. Was it like the original. To be honest I didn't notice a lot of music, there were no chase songs as there had been in earlier series.

This was a very good episode, with excellent writing and pacing. The animation was also very on point. I was worried at first glance, but relieved when jcb joined the forum and explained the show from a writer's standpoint. Now, I am 99.9% convinced that this will go down as an excellent incarnation of scooby doo. What may be lacking in deep, overarching mythology (like in mystery incorporated) makes up for in witty, well-timed comedy. Now normally, I'm not a huge fan of pure comedy shows without any other added depth, but this show appears to have well developed characters, as well as interesting mysteries with a few plots twists sprinkled here and there. As one of the fans who adored mystery incorporated as one of the best incarnations of scooby doo, I found what I was looking for in the mystery element of be cool scooby doo which struck me to be just as interesting. I'm not sure what mystery element will be present as far as overarching mythology, but the show was able to captivate me enough that it doesn't really matter to me anymore. Be cool scooby doo appears to be a different style of rebooting the original 1969 series that works just as well, and trying to compare it to mystery inc. would be apples and oranges. I was enjoying myself throughout the whole episode and really can't wait for more. I know what jcb was talking about now, as in I was able to witness firsthand what he described. I feel as if this should be a lesson toward not judging a book by it's cover, so to speak, but by enjoying the ride, and having the mindset to really feel the vibe of what creative minds have given us. It's a real treat, and I hope despite the animation of the characters being different, most people will give it more of a chance now that it has shown to be an interesting, captivating TV series so far.

just from watching this episode, i can say right bnow this will NOT be another Get A clue. the intro was decent, and Daphne playing with puppets was funny. will be watching the next episodes to get a better vibe.

I really didn't care for the animation. However, the writing totally made up for it. The humor was very solid. It's a nice departure from SDMI.

MI was too much forced romance imo, even if Hot Dog Water was a great character. Velma lips are far more prominent in Be Cool that they have been in previous shows.

Animation is still bad for me (can't get over the druggie look on Scooby and Shaggy, nor Daphne's "Seth McFarlane eyes"), but it's a tad better than the concept artwork at least, and definitely not show-breakingly bad.
Kind of disappointed they re-used an earlier villain with no connection or references to the first time around.
The humor as others have stated really stood out, though. I'll be watching for more of that.

Fresh off watching this, I have to say I really am impressed so far with this series. It's taking the franchise in a somewhat new direction (opposed to the more serious, dark approach to SDMI), but not departing from the main formula of Scooby-Doo. I think people's main issue with the show is that they can't get past the different character designs so they don't give the show a chance.
I personally liked the re-use of Elias Kingston as the villain, I thought they did a good job working it into the plot so it didn't seem too forced.
I have to say I'm really liking the new Daphne as well. Her new personality really stands out as different to me, and the puppet scenes were great.
I think this was mentioned on here in another thread, but Kate's voice really reminds me of Linda Cardellini playing Velma in the live action movies. I'm not sure that's what they were going for but I'm really liking it.
As nearly every review I've read on here says, the humor really stood out to me. Probably my favorite parts were Velma saying "Relax, the odds of all of us being attacked and/or further educated are negligible," and the ending was quite funny as well. Liked the Fred being afraid of widths and the puppet sacrifice too.
And Daphne does quite the great Scooby impression. Lol

okay, since I'm not one of the best critics of the world (since I like EVERYTHING for ex. also Sharknado) I already knew that this review would have been good (even if the episode would have been really really bad). So, so far this is one of the best pilot ,not just of Scooby nor of an animated series neither of a drama series, I've ever seen. I've always been a fan of the animation and in motion it's like so freaking good!!! The writing was just as good as a comedy movie in my opinion, I mean I've never ever laughed so hard as I did for this episode! Jon Colton Barry, you're officially my new idol. The jokes were original and actually really funny and another thing I loved was the music. I knew it would have been good since I've heard a lot from Jake Monaco, but not this good! So, despite the fact that I loved every second of it, my favorite parts were:
THE PUPPETS!!! I hope they bring them back for an episode because they were like the true essence of the episode.
The Inception kinda thing "My puppet of me's puppet of me has a puppet of me etc." was epic.
Shaggy and Scooby saying "Oh yeah cowards.. so now exactly which direction did they run"
Fred reading the quote on the statue ("In which case.. we're good" LOL)
Jon and his tactics skills
Shaggy and Scooby ruining the painting
"First step find that ghost", *ghost appears* "Cool, what's our second step?"
Velma's puppet: "Only I shall live MUahhahaha" (Still laughing for this one)
*They see the ghost* "And it's.. the statue"
"Oh, right, gravity.."
The whole explication of why Shaggy and Scooby should get on top of the tower, the actors thing (I laughed so hard at this)
The vending machine scene
That Matrixish thing Velma did with the numbers
Fred afraid of widths (YOU'RE A GENIUS)
The chase scene
"I hurt books"
"My me puppet is missing a button" "And I swallowed a button"
Puppet fight and friendship thing and Daphne being cute
The whole scene on the roof, especially Daphne's sacrifice
Scooby's last line!
Weeell, it's pretty much the whole episode. Also enjoying a lot Kate Micucci. I already can't imagine the show with Mindy. I'm already used to Kate for this. Also Matthew, Frank and Grey are deserve an Academy Award.. they're too damn good. Can't wait for next episode!

Having watched it twice since this morning, I gotta say, it was hilarious! A lot of the humor was excellent, the plot was genious (thumbs up to Velma's notice of the left-handwriting, that's a REALLY keen eye) and the re-make of the ghost of Elias Kingston was creepier and cooler! The hand puppets. Ah, the hand puppets. Such a great addition to the episode!! The sacrifice in the end almost had me dropping a tear - until the puppet landed on the bush, that was when I laughed my head off!! XD And the way Daphne fixed the gang by using her puppets was so cute! Don't wanna ruin this for people who liked the puppets, but I don't think they'll appear soon. Lillard had said in an interview (thanks to scoobylover for posting it the other day) that Daphne tries multiple things, such as the trompone or being a mime. Unless the puppets come back in a later episode, hope so! I was kinda disappointed that the scene with the flashlights (seen in the pitch pilot) was taken off. It would be really cool. Still though, the version we got was great. *crossing fingers to release an early version of the pilot as a special feature in the first Be Cool DVD* I'm so happy the first episode gets such positive reviews. Perhaps the people who were downright negative about it will be convinced to give it a chance. To all Scooby fans out there who hesitate, don't. It's a real fun ride, come along! Can't wait for the next episode!
