So I've been re-watching some of my favorite Scooby movies and shows recently and I realized that there have been so many interesting side characters in Scooby's past that we've never seen again. Now the chances of them being brought back are probably slim and none but it begs the question: Who are some of your favorite one-time side characters and why did you like them? What made them stand out to you and, if they came back, how would you like it to happen?
I have many but I'll only start with a couple.
Spoilers Ahead!
Buck from Scooby-Doo and the Alien Invaders.
I can't really say for sure what first attracted me to this character but I think it was probably his voice. He had this deep, mysterious timbre that made you suspicious and his short manner with the gang made him an instant suspect. You'd never believe he was just a huge teddy bear who collected pressed flowers. I honestly think that little detail with the flowers is what makes him hold my interest as a character; he's got layers and different sides. He's not just some hulking brute, he's an onion and that's something you rarely see in side characters.
Jacques from Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island.
He's a kind, jolly, round man who instantly makes you think of a Cajun Santa and you'd never believe he was secretly a cat-creature the entire time. You stay totally in the dark to his true involvement and may have even forgotten about him completely by the time you see him again and by then it's too late. Unlike some kind-villains that you get a bad vibe from, like Lena and Simone, I never even suspected him until he changed form and started chasing the gang and I really think that's why I like him. He's so good at being the nice guy that you're just this side of a raisin before you realize you might want to run.
Snakebite Scruggs from Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island.
Almost the complete opposite of my good buddy Jacques, you're almost certain that Snakebite is up to some mischievous business in the swamp. He's the perfect villain: he's mean and ornery, he shows up in the strangest places, his presence is even more suspicious than Beau-the-gardener and he has a hunting pig that could totally eat you alive! Throughout the entire movie I'm pretty sure that everything that's been happening will lead back to him somehow...until he shows up fishing in the middle of zombie paradise and a vital chase scene.
Ms. Grimwood's Girls and the Calloway Boys from Scooby-Doo and the Ghoul School.
I'm not naive enough to think that any of these character will ever show up again in Scooby-media but am I the only one who thought that this could totally have been a TV show? I loved everything about the rivalry between the Grimwood girls and Col. Calloway's boys from the differences in their upbringings and definitions of 'fun' to the annual volleyball tournament. I would have totally watched a TV show about these guys and their rival schools; it was just such an interesting concept.
Rufus Raucous from What's New Scooby-Doo?
As far as I know, Rufus was only featured in Riva Ras Regas but he had some serious staying power. I've come to terms with the fact that Vincent Van Ghoul will never come back in the same way that he had been in 13 Ghosts but if they ever managed to bring a character like that back as a serious regular, or even semi-regular, I would really like for it to be Rufus. He was mysterious, modern and quite the magician; I even liken his cool aura to the insane amount of cool Bluestone the Great from the original series (Hassle in the Castle) had. There's always something cool about magicians who know their stuff and Rufus really knew his stuff.
