Coulrophobia a.k.a the fear of clowns. It is not a recognised condition, it doesn't appear in the World Health Organisation ICD-10 nor the American Psychiatric Association DSM-5 listings of conditions so is more of an 'informal phobia.'
In the Space To Care study aimed at improving hospital design for children, researchers from the University of Sheffield polled 250 children regarding their opinions on décor for a forthcoming hospital redesign; all 250 children, whose ages ranged between four and sixteen, reported that they disliked clowns as part of hospital décor. Many of them, including some older children, stated in the poll that they, in fact, actively feared clowns. In other studies playing with therapeutic clowns reduced anxiety in children and improved healing in children with respiratory illness.
It's a cartoon from the 1960's, I don't think anybody expects it's to be super realistic or anything.
Yeah, compared to the super-realistic "What's New Scooby-Doo," or even "Mystery Incorporated" at times (But "Be Cool Scooby-Doo" tries to be more like a G-rated "Family Guy," IMO.)
I wonder if they came up with this episode and the ghost clown villain due to people fearing clowns? It would make sense. And this wasn't the only time there were villainous clowns (Zombo the Clown and the Crybaby Clown especially come to mind!)

This is possibly the creepiest Scooby-Doo monster ever. An evil Ghost Clown is already super creepy and then add that he hypnotized the gang and his voice. It's also really intense when they think they catch him but it's not really him

Anyone notice that this episode shows Shaggy being smarter than we tend to think he is? He's no genius but neither is he stupid. In fact he was the one who figured out the Ghost Clown's methods and turned them against him. I'd say he's of average intelligence. Fred and Daphne are of above average intelligence and Velma is of course a genius.
Oh yes, that ghost clown was pretty creepy, but he's still one of my favorite villains. In fact, I just got the official licensed latex mask of him from Rubies/Mask Illusions! Now I just need the red clown outfit and a gold hypno-coin on a string. But I don't plan to do any of those public/outdoor "clown scares" that have been happening around Halloween lately (but it would be funny if someone did so dressed as that Ghost Clown!)
(Yep, I'm going to try and collect all the officially-licensed Scooby-related latex masks from Rubies; you know I already have Scooby-Doo, and I also got Dr. Coffin a while back.)
