Hassle in the Castle has always been one of my favorite episodes and I'm not entirely sure why. The main "ghost" is one of the most classic, yet campiest designs - a guy in a sheet with two holes for the eyes - but this episode made it work thanks to Bluestone the Great! Bluestone was always one of my favorite villains simply because he made the gang think that there may actually be a ghost on haunted isle. I mean walking through walls? Come on the guy is awesome. And he paved the way for other magician-type characters, like Rufus Raucous in WNSD. My favorite part of the episode, however, is always when the skull head starts talking and then Shaggy "imagines" a ham sandwich; cracks me up every time.

Okay I can't say I absolutely understood how this villain made everything to work [like walking through walls] but then again, that's the thing about the art of Magic... I liked this episode but the ghost's chuckle got slightly annoying at times.

Bluestone explains it when they catch him at the end. He uses a camera and a trick mirror, by walking away from the mirror it makes him appear to walk through walls. Or something to that effect.

No-one would be fooled into thinking a image projected into a wall was following them but it works in the context of the cartoon so that's ok.

This was another good episode. A nice, dark setting but plenty of funny gags.
Observations: - Shaggy creates the Super Shaggy Sandwich which he describes as a double-triple-decker sardine and marshmallow fudge sandwich. - In the scene where the gang find a map of Haunted Isle, Scooby has to spell out the word Danger. This could be further evidence that he cannot read, but it does imply that he has been trying to learn. - This episode references the film and TV star dogs Rin Tin Tin and Lassie. They are referred to as Rin Din Din and Laddie, respectively. Interestingly, Lassie’s son in the 1945 movie Son of Lassie is given the name Laddie. - This episode also references popular Western actor John Wayne. It is the use of his name by Fred that convinces Scooby to lead the Phantom into a trap. - Though Bluestone the Great is stated as being wanted in six states, it is not said what crimes he is wanted for. - In this episode, the gang does not meet anyone before their discovery of the Phantom.

Pretty solid episode. The villains design is really, really underwhelming mind you, but given that is only the second episode produced, I don't fault the creators for it. Love how Scooby Doo acts brave in this episode, by pretending to be "John Wayne". Ha-ha.
The opening shot, with the boat is actually pretty atmospheric, and kinda creepy. Ted Nichols' score, which was a big asset for the show in terms of tone, really helps.

Have you noticed that Bluestone is the first villain to get arrested at the end but bear little ill will towards the gang? This seems to imply that the police were closing in on him anyway and would have caught him soon even if the gang hadn't shown up.

I love this episode. My favorite part is when the skull makes Shaggy a sandwich and he goes "like thanks" and the skull is all: "s'alright". Probably one of my favorite Scooby moments of all time.
